I find that my spirituality soars when drinking coffee, but it’s causing me anxiety. I try and compromise by drinking just a little, but I want more and more as my spirit begins to soar.
I agree with St John of the cross, but I think what I’m talking about is different. Coffee is enjoyed by countless monks and Hermits. This has little to do with the 5-senses, but more in common with a sixth sense, that being spirituality. We should never seek to alter through artificial means our mind, especially to try to feel closer to God. That cannot be good.
In fact, one of the greatest masters of spirituality, who had reached the greatest heights of mystical union with God, St. John of the Cross, taught us to disregard all the senses and to actively seek for a “dark night” of the senses, so that when we will have given everything up, everything will be given to us.
Everything that comes from the senses - even with regards to “good things”, as explained in the “Ascent to Mt. Carmel” - is finite, temporary, will pass away.
Just my thoughts.
Caffeine is a drug. The fact that one “feels closer to God” when they are on a caffeine buzz means nothing more than a good possibility they are abusing a drug.Would you be willing to suffer strong anxiety for the sake of being closer to God? Right now I plan on reducing my caffeine intake, but not completely.
