is addiction a mortal sin or does addiction become a venial sin if the sinner has no control over his addiction i have prayed to GOD every night to help me break my addictions and every morning its right back into them i never lose faith but doubts sometimes overcome me and feel like i`ll be dealing with my addictions till i die

I suggest you approach a priest and ask him to be your spiritual adviser. In response to your question, there is a point where an addiction becomes venial sin. Remember that mortal sin requires full consent of the will and addiction means you are no longer fully consenting to it. I recommend regular confession. I go every week. While confession is for reconciliation, it also helps you grow in love for our Lord and strengthens your will. If you do not already know the prayer to St. Michael, learn it and use it! Buy a jubilee medal of St. Benedict, have it blessed and wear it always. It is inscribed with prayers and has been used in exorcisms. I know it helped me the second I put it on(especially since I was tempted that very night).

Also, try the first Friday devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He has given me the strength to overcome my addictions, and of these I have many. Attend Mass and receive communion the first Friday of every month for 9 months straight and He will help you, especially at the hour of our death. Also spend time in adoration and consecrate yourself to His Sacred Heart. I’ll light a candle for you at the perpetual adoration chapel close to my house.

have you tried to give it up using the techniques for that particular addiction.
aa for alcohol
ga for gambling
nanny net for porn
patches, nicotine supplement for smoking and so on.
if you were doing these things it would seem to me they would lessen the sin,
and i agree with the last poster, regular confession and daily mass got me there.

I understand what it means to have an addictive personality. I firmly believe that alcoholism is hereditary because I’ve seen it in my family. However, I know that my God is bigger than any addiction. I am thankful for His protection that I been kept pure from some common addictions. However, I can easily get caught up in a computer game or other unnecessary attention-grabber and waste hours and hours. Here’s what helps me.

Keep a schedule. It’s not pleasant sounding to a spontaneous personality and it should have some room for flexibility, but it is truly vital to keep the important things like God and family at center stage.

Drink coffee. Sounds strange but with my compulsive ADHD-like personality, it helps me focus. Stimulants have the opposite effect on some people. Coffee is much safer than some alternatives.

Bookend your day. Start with prayer and Bible reading. End with prayer and Bible reading. It grounds my day.

Don’t give in to addiction. Temperance is the virtue we should strive for. It’s harder for some than others but I don’t believe it is unattainable.

I think the culpability is lessened in those who are struggling against an addiction, but it’s not something we should really be thinking about. The key is to intend to be freed, seek God’s grace, try hard to be better, and be contrite and penitent when you fall.

Addiction is just your weakness. If you are addicted to anything then you become a puppet of that thing. If your weakness overcomes you then only the path of God can save your life. Having some thing is good but addiction to something is not good ever and you must cry in the last either in the form of pain or tears. So walk on the path of God and overcomes your weakness.
