I believe that I tend to have addictive behaviors that show up in gluttony to the detriment of my health. I used to drink a lot and now miss certain prescriptions that gave me a boost and kept me “up.” I have become lazy as well with idle time on my hands. Fr Richards among others have said we are just trying to fill the void that can only be remedied with a relationship with Christ. I guess I am afraid to make that blind jump sometimes. Some weeks I feel him and the weeks I don’t I am left to my own willpower which can’t be relied on. I am not sure if this is a question but if someone can remind me of a scripture or thought that worked for them I can use a boost. I am a stay at home father who rarely has access to other Catholic men to help shape me.

I’d like to suggest OA. If you can’t get to meetings, go to the OA website & listen to podcasts. While the meetings seem to be mostly women, I’ve heard a number of podcasts by men.

There are some great Catholic books out there. That will fill time and give you a boost all at once.

Whenever I take my mind off of God and Heaven I too become obsessive/compulsive. Keeping my mind focused on God and Heaven is the key to all my mental health!

Dear Nightfly,

I struggle with gluttony too. I am a sugar addict. Right now I am in treatment with a Catholic therapist who specializes in treating addictions. I also use the drug Belviq to control my desire to eat. I am working towards bariatric surgery later in the year.

That being said, there are also practical ways that I use that might be helpful. Hobbies are a big help. I crochet and it is hard for me to put food in my mouth when I have a crochet hook in my hand. Don’t keep food around your favorite chair. Substitute healthy foods for junk food. I love celery dipped in salsa, I still get the crunch of tortilla chips with none of the calories.

Spiritual ways you can use that I have found as wonderful weapons in the battle against gluttony:
  1. Daily Mass - do it! I had no idea the graces that were waiting for me at daily Mass!!!
  2. The Rosary - immerse yourself in prayer when you feel like eating. I keep a rosary by my recliner.
  3. Regular confession - every week if you need it. I go once a month.
I understand your battle against gluttony so well. I will pray for you at Mass today.
