No they should not, because they are supposed to leave immediately once they are given the hosts. People should not leave Mass before the priest or the deacon declares that the Mass is ended and they have exited the sanctuary. The proper thing to do is to wait for the end of Mass and then ask an ordained person or an instituted acolyte to retrieve the necessary hosts from the tabernacle.

I know quite well what a pxy is, and equally well what a ciborium is. I raised the question because the OP clearly said

which gives the impression that the “refill” is for use during Mass.

I didn’t get that impression from his post at all. The OP clearly said that they were doing the refilling/placing of the host during Mass as in that’s when the action was taking place. In any event, I was simply trying to help and wasn’t the only one.

I witnessed today at morning mass during distribution of communion a Eucharistic minister either adding host to a number of pyx that the priest had placed on the altar or removing the host. I wasn’t really paying attention as I was next in line to receive communion.

So whether adding or removing is this a function that Eucharistic minster can do?

Ministers of Care are called to the sanctuary to receive their pyx, prior to dismissal. Perhaps they were filling the pyxs with consecrated hosts.
They receive a special “Blessing” at some parishes.

They might be low-gluten hosts, and in that case, the safest person to touch them would be a Eucharistic minister who has not handled the wheat Hosts. The priest has touched the Hosts and if he then touched the low-gluten hosts (meant for people on gluten-free diet), they would be contaminated and might make someone ill.

The person putting in the Hosts might be one of the people who cannot receive the regular Host.
