Hello, for Christmas I get to choose 3 items up to $100 on Amazon. I already have decided to get a catechism and a copy of Christian Prayer: the liturgy of the hours. What other catholic books would you recommend

Not a book, but maybe you’d like this Genealogy of Jesus poster? It’s a big one, with every name documented by chapter-and-verse.

If the Amazon copy is sold before you get there, you could get it from the source company here.

‘Introduction to the Devout Life’ by St. Francis de Sales. Also, any of Scott Hahn’s books which are all really eye-opening and informative. Then again, Jurgen’s books on the Early Church Fathers are good too.

Catholic prayers by Tan, large pocket sized and full of the most usual prayers is good.

The imitation of Christ is good.
The summa of the summa is supposed to be good.

Lives of the saints is a great idea really! I’d personally read about individual saints if you want a lot more detail, I prefer modern saints because the stories are likely to be accurate, some of the older stories may be slightly apocryphal but there are some great ones.

So many books, really.
@thelittlelday knows so many.

Some great literary adventures in store for you 🙂

The Daily Roman Missal, Sis. Maria Boulding’s translation of St. Augustine’s Confessions, several from the hardback classics from Baronius Press, Lives of the Saints (with a short prayer at the end of each entry), The Imitiation of Christ from Ignatius Press, and the Shorter Christian Prayer for travel.

I would recommend the Catechism of St. Pius X.
It’s a good condensed version of the Roman Catechism.

I woudn’t reccomend him, after all St. Thomas Aquinas ain’t that easy.
While A might love and fully comprehend St. Thomas, B might simply dislike and not comprehend a thing he’s saying.
A book about Catholic history, spirituality, and so on are for everyone, but philosophy and theology…

While I can appreciate your view that Aquinas is dense, I think it slightly uncharitable to possibly assume the OP is incapable of apprehending the text. I would advise keeping Google on hand to translate some of the remaining Latin that is still in the book. I am finding it to be quite informative, though.

I do recognize your advice is in good nature, however.

I wasn’t assuming that he’s incapable and I wasn’t being uncharitable, I’m just saying that St. Thomas Aquinas and philosophy/theology ain’t for everyone.
About B not liking and not comprehending I’m actually referring to others like me, that tried to read the Summa but gave up in the end due to the density of the work.

There will be updates/changes in 2020, so, your book may become obsolete in two years. AFIK they have not yet released what will change.

You can always download iBreviary for free on a mobile device in the meantime. It is what I use.

Hmmm, looks like you’re just becoming a Catholic soon?

Seems like a book on the Saints would be a good purchase. Not sure which one.
