I want to give a rosary to a co-worker who is a bit morally and behaviorally challenged. He has a heart of gold, but it’s challenged at every turn by evil. I might be as kind to him as I can, but that 60 second conversation is followed 12 hours of negativity and vulgarity in an abusive environment (we’re garbagemen, which means we don’t exactly get a stream of holy thoughts flowing through our shop!)

I have a blessed paracord rosary. 550 lb break strength. I want to give it to him, but before I do, is there any additional blessing, prayer of exorcism, etc. that might be imparted to it? Perhaps I do some penance before giving it to him?

This guy is drawn to me since I’m one of the only people in the shop who will listen to him and treat him like a human being (which is convicting on me as I realize this because I should have done SO MUCH MORE, GOD HAVE MERCY ON ME, A SELFISH, OBTUSE SINNER!!!)

So I believe the Holy Spirit sez, “Ok Brian, give him that paracord rosary you prayed on so much!”

“Excellent!” I sez.

It’s blessed, been riding in my truck, and had a couple hundred Divine Mercys prayed on it.

BUT…

Could a priest or bishop also impart some additional blessing to fight evil? I simply don’t know. If there’s anything additional I can do here, I want to.

Of course I’ll resolve to be more kind as best I can, but also understand I’m dealing with an environment that, at least I believe, would do well to have an exorcist.

Before you gift this person a rosary:
  • are they the type who are likely to pray on it if you give it to them?
  • will they understand the significance of a rosary/ blessed object?
If you are concerned about keeping this person from evil, then a medal of the Blessed Mother or St. Michael might be the best thing to give them. Also, unless you know the person will treasure and respect the gift, I wouldn’t have it blessed because they might just toss it in the trash on a whim. Tell them that they can have it blessed themselves by a priest if they want.

A rosary that’s been prayed on a lot isn’t a magic talisman against evil. It’s a tool for prayer. It should be only given to people who respect it and likely might use it.

A rosary is not a superstitious item. Giving a Rosary to another simply will not exorcise them. We have no authority to exorcise others, all we can do is pray to God to help them in their daily struggles and show them faith.

I would start by simply asking if he would like to say a Hail Mary with you. Or an Our Father. See if he would like to pray with you.

Good on you for listening to him and treating him like a human being. Our first role in bringing others to Christ is to listen. And show love of neighbour.

I think before giving him a Rosary, which is already blessed, so does not need any more blessings, teach this guy the faith and what the Rosary is all about and what Our Blessed Mother is all about

You and he are in my prayers.
