I am sad and unsure,

I am the only Catholic in my family. I can deal with that. Although not interested in joining so far my spouse has been impressed by watching and listening.
Then my non catholic son married a woman who strongly dislikes and resents the Catholic church.
For the most part we get along fine. I adore her children which I now consider to be my grandchildren. ( they may be baptized Catholic but I am afraid to ask)
I do have trouble when she runs down the church,
Most of the time I just keep my mouth shut hoping that she will see that not all Catholics are bad.
It does hurt me inside though. I want to show her its not what she thinks but you cant say anything, she will just argue.
One of the worst things is that I know she wont let me bring the kids to church, not even for Christmas or Easter and has given them a bad view of the church.
Help me know how to handle this in the best way.

I think it’s fair to say you’d rather not discuss religion, especially if these conversations occur at your home. It won’t fix everything, but it’s very fair to request that people keep their hurtful comments to themselves.

Thank you. That is pretty much what I am trying to do.
It just makes me so sad.

IneedGod,

Have you tried to talk with her about her hatred for the Church? As in why does she hate a House of God. Is she of another faith or just hates all Churches? If she is a Christian, ask her how she can say that she is a believer and follower of Jesus and yet hate others that believe and follow Jesus but just do things differently. How is that following His teachings? You can even reminder her that Jesus started the Catholic Church – making St. Peter the first Pope.

Muslim extremists who are terrorist in the middle-east believe like that to the point that they will kill anyone - even those who are also Muslim but do not worship as they say all Muslims should do.

I pray that God grants you and your family strength and peace.

She dislikes all churches I think but especially the Catholic church. This was due to her past marriage and the experience she had with the church at that time.
She believes that all you need to do is to try to be a good person.

I’ve made sure my home has a little bit of Catholic Art in every room, so that way when I have people over, like you might with your daughter-in-law, they will see the physical representation of the Church without being in a church building.

Then, if you show them kindness and a nice time, I think they’d be less likely to deride the Church, which is visibly very important to you.

I wish I were able to be of more help.

Thank you, it seems I do everything suggested.
Probably more prayer is what I should do.
Its an odd situation to me.

Many people feel that all you need to do is be a good person, these days. Even my own husband does not believe in attending church. He says that church is everywhere, and you can pray anywhere. He says that it is all about money. When we married, I was not attending church. I can only pray that he will “want” to join me, some day. Recently, we had our marriage blessed in church. Per my request, he attended mass with me, the following day. However, I think his mind was not in church at all, only his physical body. I can only pray that he will want to attend someday.

I have an old friend on FB that attacks all religions. He grew up Catholic. I have blocked his posts from showing up on my newsfeed.

I think if she is in your home, that she should respect you by not bashing your religion. If you are doing everything suggested, all you can do is pray.

You are handling it in the best possible way by living your life as a practicing Catholic and respecting her decision (for now!) not to bring her children to church. This is job for the Holy Spirit; pray for her, your son and the children, and let Him take care of the rest.
