Then why did you say “supposedly?” That’s like someone saying “I’m supposedly married to my wife” when a person knows full well that they ARE married to their spouse.

Are lay people allowed to interrupt Mass for* 40 minutes* with their petitions? Sounds mawkish to me. I don’t think I could have taken it as a member of the congregation.

Surely a Mass said for all the names in a special book of remembrance would be better? A requiem TLM, said by a priest vested in black, would be better for the Holy Souls. Keep the emotionalism out of it. Just read the names out before Mass.

I think the OP really meant ‘adlibbed’ [is there such a word? ]

There should be NO INVENTING when it comes to the Mass! Priests should ‘Say the Black, Do the Red’, to quote Father Z. No ad-libbing!

I’m not tracking - why would you have placed the emphasis on ‘faithful’?

Other areas it is specified that certain lay positions need to be Catholics in good standing. I would think that reading the intentions would need a similar criteria. This really is not a big concern for me one way or the other, but as I have not axe to grind either way, I am giving my understanding of this as I see it. Perhaps we could find a canon lawyer to weight in.

This was done at a Solemn High Mass (EF) I attended last night. The choir actually presented us with the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Faure. Very beautiful. Half the sermon was in Spanish, half English. Extremely well attended, close to capacity in a very spacious church, which surprised me as I thought most would be spending time watching the election results.

Sorry, I missed reading, “The Petitions of the faithful was extended to an over 40 minutes process, everybody was herded to a loudspeaker to say his own petitions…”

At our service, the people of the parish who had lost a family member during the year, were given a card with their deceased family member’s name on it.

During the service, the names of those souls were announced in groups of 5, and a family member came forward to be presented with a candle by Father, which they lit and then the person took the candle and placed it on a ledge behind the alter.

Once all the candles were there, Father blessed the candles with incense, sending our prayers for those souls to God.

The 50 some cards (were laid on the alter) during Mass. After Mass was over, families returned to the alter to collect their card and their candle.
