Admonishing Your Parents

It seems every time my parents are away and they call me, my Father has to mock Indian IRS scammers accents. I used to do this too, but I realized that it is derogatory and thus, a sin. Last night my Father called and once again mocked Indian people’s accents. I told him to stop it.

I know we are to admonish the sinner, but my parents aren’t even religious. Did I disrespect him by telling him to “stop it” with the mocking of Indian people’s accents? Part of my thinks I did him a favor by telling him to stop this offensive habit, but another part of me thinks I disrespected him. 🤷
 
I suggest you go back to the thread on admonishing the sinner and re read the links there. Admonishing the sinner has criteria, none of which are met in the scenario you describe,

It would not be wrong to tell your dad that you would like him to refrain from doing voices because it’s racist. There need not be a “this is a sin” conversation. Saying “stop it” in the manner you convey here is probably not going to be helpful. If your dad is the type to do something all the more because he knows it bothers you, then your best bet is to say nothing.
 
Telling your parents you don’t find something funny is not admonishing. It’s stating a fact.

You can talk to a priest if you find yourself confused about what is a sin.
 
If he calls you & mimics a telemarketer …he’s joking around. 😃

The calls I get from them all have Indian accents, so what should he use… a German accent?

Lighten up…worry about real sins & real Racism!

I admit this is pretty funny, as my parents are from India.
I don’t know if that is actually a sin, but you don’t have to ask these questions on this forums, because it may only worsen any scrupulosity you have.

I’m Italian but I don’t get offended when people make dumb Italian jokes or Mafia references.

Since when is being derogatory in humor a sin? I didn’t know this. If it truly is, I have to rethink some things, unfortunately… 😦
 
Doing impressions of accents is sinful?
I guess watching actors is out now too.
I guess using the word laddy on St Patrick’s day is out. Singing songs from my fair lady is out. Saying y’all when you don’t live in the south is out.
And definately ordering a “doubledilla” at Taco Bell is out.

Quick, someone call Alex trebek and tell him not to attempt his ethnic pronunciations in jeopardy anymore.

Is Steve martin’s “wild and crazy guys” now sinful?

To the OP, starting this thread, all advice given is good, but please don’t walk away misunderstanding the above. To make it perfectly clear, racism IS a sin.

Yes hating another based on skin color is sinful. Thankfully that doesn’t happen as often as one thinks.

Yes, but the question is where one draws the line between jesting humor and racism. They’re obviously quite extreme when compared to one another…

Sometimes it’s a hard call. If all funny stuff with accents was racist, Raj on Big Bang wouldn’t have an accent. On the other hand, I’ve known some people to use accents in a way that isn’t funny at all.
 
Thanks for the replies! I highly doubt my father is racist. He just likes to mock the Indian IRS scammers (like them telling him they would “report him to the sheriff” if he didn’t do what they said.)

Racism often starts with humor, and then is often justified with “I was just kidding”, or “He didn’t mean anything by it.”

Most of this type of humor stereotypes the subject, which is racism.
 
OP, whatever the merits of your discomfort, it’s perfectly okay to ask your father to refrain from repeatedly saying something that you find annoying. Don’t be rude about it, is all.

True, true. Then that must mean that this is a cautious area, especially in modernity where people of different ethnic groups have far more interaction.
