Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, the second Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, is the spiritual leader of more than 1.3 million Catholics. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has the largest number of Catholics of the 15 dioceses in Texas.

In recognition of this growing faith community and a lifetime of Catholic leadership, Pope Benedict XVI elevated Cardinal DiNardo the College of Cardinals in 2007, making him the first Cardinal Archbishop from the Southern United States and one of approximately 120 cardinals who will select the next pope.
In both this Archdiocese and as a member of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture, Cardinal DiNardo is known for his constant efforts to unite a multicultural, multilingual flock of Christian faithful to live out the Gospel with passion and enthusiasm.

Cardinal DiNardo and his twin sister were born in Ohio in 1949. The family, including two more siblings, moved to Pittsburgh, where he graduated from the Jesuit Bishop’s Latin School. He then studied for the priesthood at St. Paul Seminary and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He went on to receive theological degrees from the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he later taught.

Cardinal DiNardo was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1977. He worked for the Congregation for Bishops in Rome from 1984 to1991, then returned to Pittsburgh to again be a parish priest. In 1997, Cardinal DiNardo was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City, Iowa. He became Coadjutor Bishop of the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese in March of 2004. When Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza retired in 2006, the Pope appointed Daniel DiNardo an archbishop and, on November 24, 2007, elevated him to become the first-ever cardinal from Texas.

Cardinal DiNardo serves on the Board of the National Catholic Partnership for Persons with Disabilities, a position to which he brings a certain empathy, contending as he does with significant hearing loss in both ears. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Catholic University, is an advisor to the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, is a member of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and is part of the Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He is the chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

Cardinal DiNardo’s motto is “Ave Crux Spes Unica,” taken from a Latin hymn dated to the year 609, and means, “*Hail, Oh Cross, Our Only Hope.”

Excellent plan! We can have versions of them in different liturgical garb (with mitres, without mitres) and statistics on the back. The over-80yo Cardinals will have a different colored border on their cards. :ballspin:

ACCRA, Ghana – Often cast as the social conscience of the church, Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson is viewed by many as the top African contender for pope.

The 64-year-old head of the Vatican’s peace and justice office was widely credited with helping to avert violence following contested Ghanaian elections. He has aggressively fought African poverty, while disappointing many by hewing to the church’s conservative line on condom use amid Africa’s AIDS epidemic.

Turkson’s reputation as a man of peace took a hit recently when he showed a virulently anti-Islamic video, a move now seen as hurting his papal prospects. Observers say those prospects sank further when he broke a taboo against public jockeying for the papacy – telling The Associated Press the day after Benedict XVI’s resignation announcement that he’s up for the job “if it’s the will of God.”

In the secretive world of the Vatican, there is no way to know who is in the running, and history has yielded plenty of surprises. But these are the names that have come up time and again in speculation. Today: Peter Turkson.
Speculation about the possibility of a pope from the developing world has swirled for years as the church’s growth has moved south. In Africa, between 1978 and 2007, the number of Catholics grew from 55 million to 146 million. Latin America counts 40 percent of the world’s Catholics. In contrast, Catholic communities in Europe are in decline.

In 2009, Benedict called Africa “an immense spiritual lung” for humanity and he has shown a special regard for the continent, naming a higher percentage of Africans as Cardinals than his predecessors. He went to Cameroon and Angola in 2009 and to Benin in 2011, at age 84. Benedict showed his high esteem for Turkson by naming him to various positions of authority.

Turkson comes from humble beginnings as the child of a carpenter and vegetable seller from the mining town of Wassa Nsuta in western Ghana. He rose quickly in the Catholic Church. After attending St. Peter’s Regional Seminary in Ghana, he went on to earn two masters degrees in theology and divinity in 1974 at St. Anthony-on-Hudson Seminary in New York. Pope John Paul II named Turkson Archbishop of Cape Coast in 1992 and made him cardinal in 2003.

He is known by friends and colleagues in Ghana as an intellectual and a down-to-earth “humble servant of God” who prays several hours a day, and in his free time enjoys jogging, playing guitar and singing. He speaks English, Italian, Portuguese, Hebrew and Greek.

Last week at Mass they had baskets of cards in the narthex with the names of cardinals to pray for. I forgot to get one so I’m glad I saw this site.
