Adoption by Same Sex parents vs Orphanage: Morality

Some Catholic adoption agencies have been forced to close simply because they refuse to place children with same sex couples. The Church considers that placing children in a disordered living situation constitutes child abuse; thus Catholic adoption agencies will not place children with same sex couples.
Jim, Im not for gay adoption but the irony and sad reality of your post, is that no one takes the Church seriously on what they view constitutes child abuse unfortunately. Many will point out at the elephant in the room, “Gay parenting is child abuse, but allowing priests to molest children isnt?” Sadly they would have a point too.

The part in quotes is your statement, not mine or the Church’s. Both situations are abusive.

This is kind of the point. We don’t live in a perfect world, so we don’t have the luxury of making the ideal choice. Sometimes we have to make the best choice in all the circumstances.

Of course the CDF is not promoting same-sex parenting. And, with all things being equal, I think there are advantages that a heterosexual family offers. But I also think that when things are not equal, we need to acknowledge that the most important thing for a child growing up in a family is love and stability, not who is providing it.
I see why you would think that but the Church is not convinced. And I’m puzzled when people who disagree with Church teaching post here. I know the media is trying very hard to normalize this idea by portraying it on TV. I watched an episode where a same sex couple were taking their child to school. One was positive about it while walking in to meet the teacher, and his partner couldn’t help saying things that were just unusual. I get the feeling that, for some, it’s just: “Get over it. This is how it’s going to be and we want your approval, but if we don’t get it, that won’t matter anyway.” Does that sound right to you?

Catholics in the pews need the truth, not social inventions.

The part that I have quoted is what many people have asked and will continue to point out. It appears they do have a point; before the Church can deem what is and isnt abusive to others, it should first take care of its own house and make sure it isnt guilty (or guilty of worse) of what it condemns.

Hello Easter Joy, I love your name by the way. I did intend the original question to mean two women who are living in an unnatural relationship, a mockery of marriage if you will. I certainly find the sexual morality of the parents EXTREMELY important, but am wondering if the good done by being raise by a couple who wanted them genuinely in at least a superficially Christ centered house would outweigh the ill done by placing a child in an unnatural household.
A prostitute may be able to raise wonderful children who love her and who do well in life. The question is whether or not this means the fact that she is a prostitute should make no difference at all when considering whether she ought to be an adoptive parent.

Even the Pope goes to Confession.

What would that point be? Child molestation IS child abuse and the Church opposes that as strongly as it opposes same-sex parenting. The sad thing is, the Church has the best record of preventing child molestation of any organization dealing with children, and yet people act like the Church has a terrible record on this.

The fact that you’d deny a child to a loving homosexual couple is ridiculous. Straight couples don’t have the monopoly on being loving, good parents. I don’t think it’s very Christ-like t& think the Church needs to learn to accept the LGBT community into its tanks or it’ll fall into irrelevance.
Deny them? Do you mean they’re entitled to adopt a child? Are you saying that the sexual habits of prospective parents ought to have no bearing on whether they are going to bring up their child to know the difference between what is right or wrong? If not, why are you making homosexual behavior into an exception? It is not unjust to discriminate between one potential home and another when one is discriminating on the basis of what a child is necessarily going to be taught is true and false. Teaching them to accept others is not the same as teaching them that a Christian must accept everything others do, whether or not it is according to the law of God, or to accept all systems of behavior that others choose as their value system to be equally legitimate. If you find that in the New Testament, enlighten us.

As far as this specter of “falling into irrelevance” that we are constantly being warned about, I find nothing more likely than that the remnant of believers will be considered irrelevant or worse by the time the Second Coming rolls around. A low estimation in the eyes of the World should be the least of our concerns. I don’t know if she actually said it, but I think the saying so often attributed to Mother Teresa is spot on: God didn’t call me to be successful. God called me to be faithful.

OK. All have sinned, so moral law shall not be considered when finding a home for an orphan.

We’re on a Catholic forum. Let’s give Catholic answers and let the World give its own opinions out in the world.

A child is not a possession that can be given to a couple. The focus is supposed to be on the welfare of the child not the desires of the adults. * All other things being equal,* a home with a mother and a father is ALWAYS going to be better for the child than a home with adults living a public immoral lifestyle.

If you are talking specifically about adoptions where the Church is involved, how could the Church possibly place a child in a home where there is close to zero chance he/she would receive a Catholic upbringing.

P.S. I have no idea what you mean about the Church’s tanks. 🤷

Yes, the Church opposes child abuse, buts its not good at recognizing it as its happening, especially when its right under their nose.

The point seems fair though, that the Church isnt a good discerner of morality. It opposes gay adoption, but will let a predator priest assault children for years in an effort to keep things quiet. That isnt good judgement, any normal person off the street would have handled that situation far better. And stying quiet to save your own skin while many children continue to be harmed is, in itself, immoral.

The average sinner does things like look at porn, use foul language in certain instances, checks out women -but- when clergy go bad, they are discovered as meth ring leaders and sex shop owners, money launderers, child abusers, public sex offenders who have aids, exploiters of third world children for sexual favors, Vatican sex parties in which a murder occurred according to Fr. Amorth, and on and on. And these are the people who are telling us that flirting with the chick at Starbucks is wrong or that gay parenting is scandal?

The Church isnt a good discerner/applier of morality, so their opinion on it is null and void to the vast majority of the population.

Again: This is a Catholic forum, not the “vast majority of the population.” The Church is not only a good “discerner” of morality here, but is recognized for what she is: the* definitive *“discerner” of faith and morals.

Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. Matt. 10:14-15

(Did you notice that there was no concern about “staying relevant”?)

Just out of curiosity:
Question 1: Who do you think the vast majority of the population sees as the *most definitive *authority on morality?
Question 2: Who do you consider to be your own most definitive authority on morality?

I meant ranks.

A homosexual couple can raise a child in a Catholic home. That’s totally possible. don’t tell me there aren’t good parents who are both LGBT and Catholic. Immoral lifestyle? I don’t see that as immoral and think the people on this forum aren’t the good Catholics they pretend to be but rather people who’d rather judge others’ private lives.

A child can have just as good a home as with homosexual parents as straight parents and to call it child abuse is ridiculous and an insult to real victims of abuse like the children who’ve been abused by priests who the Church protected.

The Church will not change Her thinking about this. If other people want to have private lives then don’t go public about your sexual orientation.

So someone has to stay in the closet? That’s just bigoted. Get out of the past we’re in the year 2015.

I think some people’s problem with this “immoral” lifestyle is they have their heads in the gutter. If you stopped focusing on people’s private lives and saw them as people you’d see they’re just like everyone else, people who can live like we all do, laugh, cry, parent.
