I apologize if this is in the wrong thread. Just curious how many of you expanded your family through adoption? Are there any regular threads or groups here for adoptive parents?

we did!!! i think there may be a thread in the parenting section…

we adopted through catholic charities and our son is a joy and a miracle. we were very very very blessed. no exposures, he is healthy and happy and a complete fit to our family!

our adoption experience itself was really a perfect story. no drama, no ultra long wait, and our agency was reasonable priced as well. turned out that our case worker and i have become dear friends and now she is a regular part of our lives!

we could not ask for a better scenario all around, and would do it again if we knew we could get another child, but as it is, my DH is mid 40’s and we were told that it’s unlikely that an expectant mom would choose us this time around. we have thrown around the idea of adopting a small sibling group from india in the future, but we believe that our baby time is done as God has made it pretty clear that we are to let other waiting families enjoy their FIRST baby as our son was our second.

please feel free to PM me for info or questions…

Congratulations! 😃

My husband and I really wanted to go with Catholic Charities but we just don’t think we could afford it. We’ve been toying with the idea of adopting through foster care since we’ve been told of the numerous children that become available for adoption and it’s practically free. On the other hand, we’ve been told that you get what you pay for when adopting…not sure if that’s true.

My wife and I adopted internationally from Guatemala, one boy and one girl, our only 2 as we are deemed infertile medically. They are absolute joys!! I will admit, I struggled at the beginning of the adoption process, but my beautiful wife showed me love is a choice and my pendulum swung fast and hard to the adoption side! Then I felt we couldn’t do it fast enough. Of course the Lord had other plans for us and I had to learn some patience waiting for our daughter. Our son’s adoption went much more quickly.

Sadly Guatemala is now closed to US adoptions now. We talked about another child before it closed, but our ages were playing against us.

One of my best friends is from Guatemala and her family is full of gorgeous people. I’m half Cuban and would love to adopt a sibling group of Hispanic children. I looked at the “waiting child” list today for my state and saw two Hispanic sibling groups available for adoption. I’m keeping my heart open to what God wants for us.

I am a grandmother to two adorable grandsons whom I love so much. Adoption is such a blessing. I pray for both of the birth others who chose to place them in our family.

we have 6 children, Our 4th child was adopted from Ethiopia when she was 2 years old,. It was a fantastic experience and I would do it again without hesitation. The process took us about 9 months from when we started our homestudy, to when we had our daughter home in our living room.

we have 3, one from Paraguay before it closed and 2 from Guatemala! All were big adventures and worth it!

My FH was adopted by two very loving parents, through Catholic Charities, iirc. He openly talks about how their choice to adopt him is the greatest gift they ever gave him. As his mom tells him all the time, “I love all of my children equally, but you’re the one I got to choose.”

Their family story is actually quite moving, and she often chalks up her rampant fertility afterward as a blessing from God for adopting him. She had 7 miscarriages before the adoption, then after went on to have 7 more healthy children.

Edit: BBCode, not HTML, Manda.

My husband I adopted both of our children internationally in two separate adoptions. Catholicanne, I suggest talking to Catholic Charities about different options in adopting. As for cost, don’t forget that there is currently a $12,000ish federal tax refund for adoptions, plus many employers now give adoption grants as well.

It is true that children coming from the foster care system can be very challenging to parent, so it’s important to be realistic. But some people are called to that kind of parenting and they rise to the challenge.
