I read a long time ago, can’t entirely remember where, that its considered a sin for a single man to adopt a child. Surely this can’t be true? I realise that the ideal family environment contains both a mother and a father but if a man (or woman for that matter) is dedicated to raising a child but is unmarried does an adoption of this nature constitute a sin in the eyes of the Church?

do you have a source for this? if not, there is really no point in discussing it is there.

Fair enough I’ll try and find a source, I didnt realise I needed one to discuss something.

it is if you are making a statement about what the Church teaches. We can’t debate whether or not that teaching is valid until we determine the claim is actually true.

OK well this has been a waste of a thread, all i can find are thousands of links to the gay adoption row  maybe I should have just asked ‘‘is it morally permissible for single men to adopt children?’’. Sorry about that I’ll know for next time

No it is not a sin for a single person to adopt a child. I am not sure where you came across such a statement.

It is *preferrable *that a child be in a household with a mother and a father, but that is not always possible.

If by “single” you are referring to adoption by homosexual persons, then the church definitely has a stance on that-- a child should not be placed in a homosexual household.

Is that also the case for chaste people who are homosexual? As in someone who does not engage in homosexual activity someone essentially ‘‘permanently in the closet’’?

The Church has issued no statement on a chaste homosexual person adopting that I know of.

The Church’s explicit statement is regarding those in an active homosexual lifestyle.

I think it would be *imprudent *to adopt in this situation, given their life-long struggle with SSA, but I do not believe it is forbidden.

As with all things of a spiritual and moral nature, discussing the issue with a priest would be the best route.
Of course, I agree. But as its only a hypothetical situation and it doesn’t affect my life one way or another, I thought this would be better than asking my priest to take time out of his duties to answer questions. Thanks once again for your help 🙂
