Adoration at a catholic Chartism renewal in a gym.
After the speakers talk. A priest came out with a wafer host on a pole. And told everyone to get on their knees. And the group began to sing and worship the wafer host.
To many Evangelical people. This is remenisiant. Of ancient former religions. Now extinct.
Are Catholics taught that this wafer host is really God?
It appears that this is counter to the 2nd commandment.

It appears odd to some people.
I don’t think saint Paul would encourage this.
So where did this religious ceremony get its acceptance?

So basic: “This is my body” and “This is my blood”. Jesus told us this and the Church has always taught it so it’s true, no questions asked.

Also, such a thing in a gym is very irreverent imho.

If an Evangelical makes a serious reading of the sixth chapter of John, he will begin to understand the reasoning behind Catholic theology concerning “the breaking of the bread” and the unique Catholic position on Jesus being the bread of life that is radically different from the evangelical interpretation.

I’m not sure how long we as Catholics have had Eucharistic Processions. Someone will have to look it up.

Nope, St Paul was also aware that the Body and blood is the Body and Blood.

When Jesus says, “This is my Body”, we believe Him. Jesus held Himself in His Hands at the last supper. Is trusting in Jesus a violation of the first commandment (we number them differently)? No.

In any Eucharistic procession, the Host is placed in a monstrance. The priest covers his own hands with the chasuble while holding the monstrance at the base.

Eucharistic procession

The procession usually includes at least one crucifix, and sometimes candles or lamps that are pole mounted. It might be easy to assume that the monstrance appeared to be on a “pole”.

It sounds like the OP probably did not know, which is why I was 'splaining it out like that not to you personally. There are all kinds of liturgical abuses!

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I guess we need the OP to describe it more specifically.

What may have appeared to him as a pole may have been something permitted.
I am always astounded that some on CAF thinks that there is NOT ONE PRIEST who knows how to do anything.
It’s getting ridiculous.

Jamal gave the correct answer.
Evangelical: We Catholic believe i the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, chiefly because He said so We take Him at His holy world.
At Communion, there is little point of receiving a piece of bread and pretending it’s is God.
Which is the more incomprehensible thing to do?
God bless you.
I’m enjoying your questions, as many have the same questions but are too shy to ask.

Masses are held in gyms all the time, as well as Adoration. That doesn’t make them irreverent. Priests have walked down dirty city streets with the Blessed Sacrament.

Often, depending on the event, a gym can hold more people or is easier in the case of retreats or presentations. Our Hispanic ministry office holds a gathering every year that takes place at a high school gym, and the Archbishop even comes for Mass and Adoration. I see nothing but reverence at those events.

OP: It is reminiscent of an ancient religion…Judaism that is!

So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. (Numbers 21:9 NRSV)

The New Testament and the early Church Fathers both testify that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist under the form of bread and wine. We do indeed adore Christ our saviour who comes to us in “the breaking of the bread”.
Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:35 NRSV)

Right! I can’t understand why more priest don’t come to CAF so we could teach them all they need to know that they didn’t learn in seminary and what they are doing wrong. It’s so frustrating.

Part of the issue is whether you understand (not necessarily agree) the Catholic teaching on the Real Presence. Keep in mind many Protestant communions have varying interpretations, some of which are fairly close to the RCC. So RCC is not too far off from groups you might find compatible.

In terms of the specific adoration ceremony itself, what do you think about the flag (i. e. a piece of cloth?). Have you seen people pledge allegiance to the cloth? - Americans do it with hand over heart, or they salute the cloth(!) hand over forehead. I don’t know if you have been in the military, but in any event you must have seen parades, processions, or highly stylized processions in which they do all kinds of things with “the colors”. Ever been a boy scout?

Have you ever seen a ceremony in a church, or elsewhere, in which a bible is held up high- or this pile of paper is put in a place of “honor”? eek! Think about “altar calls” where people are encouraged to leave their seat, and walk down to the non-existent “altar” which is really a stage or platform. Umm, why there? why not receive Jesus 20 rows back in my own seat?

I have seen Protestant charismatic churches do many things. They “bless” the oil, “annoint” the doorway, even “annoint” the sidewalk in front so passersby get a “blessing”. (I do not mock this, I love this, just pointing it out to you).

Describe religious ceremonies that you think are better.

If you are not a Catholic, yes, it appears odd, and you probably will not get over it.

For Catholics, it is a matter of faith and that the bread is changed into the Body of Christ during the consecration by a validly ordained priest. "This is my Body which is given to you …"

As such, it is worthy of worship. Note that it was the priest who brought out the ‘bread’ and how reverent he was.

God bless.

Many times a gym is built before the actual church and the parishioners meet in the gym until the church is finished so the Tabernacle would be there and the altar.
I don’t see how having an Adoration retreat in a gym would be irreverent if Mass can be held in a gym too.

Yes, we believe the host is transformed into the body and blood af Christ. Because he told us Himself.
50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ 53 So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ 59 He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.

60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ 61 But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, ‘Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But among you there are some who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65 And he said, ‘For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.’im
In addition, when he says “eat my flesh” the literal translation is more graphic and more like “gnaw on/bite into my flesh”. He was also quite insistent on this point. He allowed many followers to leave Him because they could not accept it.
