Hi all! I run daily, and run by my church. I sometimes want to stop in and go to adoration for a bit, but usually run in a tee shirt and running shorts. Would it be inappropriate to stop in the Church in such attire?

Okay, I think the “of course it would be” is a little unkind, seeing as my question is sincere. If there is nobody in there, and my only way of getting to adoration is during these runs (I don’t own a car, and sometimes don’t have enough time to walk) then I think my question is a legitimate one. I appreciate the point you are making, that different attire is suitable for different occasions, but also am weighing this against the fact that God is pleased by adoration. I suppose I could wear sweat pants and a shirt, or leggings and a longer shirt, but would even that be acceptable?

Sorry if answer sounded rude.
God is pleased by adoration but is not acceptable to come in church in running shorts.
There is Jesus, you are not alone.
Try to change clothes at home and come to adoration or go running in more appropriate clothes when you know for possibility that you are gonna visit church.

Okay. I am satisfied with this counsel. Thank you. (I don’t understand it fully, seeing as I am sure God knows what I look like with my running shorts on! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:, but my gut instinct was that it was inappropriate, and I see that I am not the only one with this instinct.) Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

I’d like to say that if you’re male and you’re unnoticed or minimally noticed it’s fine. However that’s problematic, and of course politically incorrect. So, I’d say you probably should compromise by wearing long shorts and appear attired for, say, a walk. I sometimes carry a collared shirt to put on over my tee shirt when I get to the church (which is wise anyway due to the air conditioning).

God knows how we look naked but we don’t walk on street naked. That is the point.
Every place has it’s rules of clothing. Church is sacred place.
You’re welcome!

It depends on the customs where you live.
In my area, a clean T-shirt and loose shorts that aren’t too short or tight are okay for Adoration.

However, if you’re all sweaty and the T-shirt and shorts are the more abbreviated kind for running, like sleeveless or cut off or something, then shower and change before you go to church.

And if people in your area expect something more formal, then respect that.

An opinion from a guy; I don’t think it would be necessarily inappropriate to wear more casual workout type clothes to adoration, but I would suggest airing on the side of more “conservative”. Perhaps looser fitting or longer shorts or longer sweats. I wouldn’t suggest more “skimpy” things. I don’t think God would be scandalized, as he looks into your heart, but other people might be.

Peace

Yes,:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: but that is because of other ppl, no? And if other ppl can deal with me wearing running shorts outside, why can’t they deal with me wearing running shorts in church, when (if there even are ppl there) there eyes will be directed towards the altar, and I will be kneeling in a pew with in a moment?

Sorry, I’m just bored with quarantine and that is why I’m playing devil’s advocate.

Good point. 👏👏 although I wish other ppl could just be happy I’m going to adoration! But true, true; I don’t want to scandalize anyone.

Would it be inappropriate
Yes it would be inappropriate, you are not in a park or on the streets running, you are in the Lords House, and The Lords house is do Respect,it does not matter if no one else is there, it is Gods House…

The rule I know is nothing above knees and shorter sleeves than average T-shirt in church. I’ve seen that sign on our church’s doors and many other.
I get what you mean but I don’t think it is appropriate.
We have this

CathF, based on your profile you are in Europe.

In many parts of USA the rules are a little different. There are a few churches that don’t let you wear shorts or sleeveless clothing and they will usually post a sign like “no shorts”. But most of them don’t have such a rule.

Also there are many outfits that people can wear to go running that don’t look like the “Stop” ones in the picture.
When I was a teenager I used to go running each morning in a t-shirt and stretch pants that came to my ankles. My mother suggested I run to church, go to morning Mass, and run home.
So I did that for a whole summer. It was no problem.

So it really depends on what the OP is wearing to go running (and whether he sweats a lot when he runs), and what the rules are for his particular area and his particular parish church.

@Tis_Bearself Yeah Europe it is.
I understand that you maybe have different rules so my apology for pushing mine opinion too hard.
I should ask OP more questions to get better picture.

It’s no problem.

People need to be aware that the rules are not the same everywhere.

And some runners take it a bit too far. I was at Mass in the Cathedral downtown on a day when the city was hosting a large marathon. Some of the runners decided to stop into Mass wearing very skimpy running outfits and of course drenched in sweat. One of them was even wearing a rain poncho that looked like a plastic trash bag (it might have actually been a plastic trash bag). The Cathedral is not super-formal but they definitely looked out of place and of course no one wants a person sweating all over a pew that someone else will soon have to sit in.
