Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

To be considered Adoration, does the Blessed Sacrament have to be exposed, or is it still considered adoration when it is behind the closed Tabernacle doors?
 
For what purpose?

If you want, for example, to gain an Indulgence for your Adoration then the Handbook specifically says no difference whether the Host is exposed or in the Tabernacle.
 
Adoration is worship of God (latria). Our Eucharistic worship of Jesus is the same whether He is exposed in the monstrance or reposed in the tabernacle.
