Adoration of the Blessed sacrament.

Hi,

I have never taken part in this event but my parish just recently sent emails to everyone letting us know it is going on and I decided I would like to do it. I always enjoy praying in my church and the idea of being able to pray and be with Jesus makes it even better. I don’t really know what you do or any formal things one should do when at this event. i.e bowing/kneeling, specific prayers? So a Guide to what one does and when would be really helpful.

I also herd you gain plenary indulgence for attending these for more than 30 min. I plan on staying for the whole hour it is offered. I went to confession 3 days ago and I received the Eucharist at Sunday mass so I assume that I meet the prior conditions to gaining plenary indulgence. I shouldn’t assume.

There are two more conditions for a plenary indulgence. You must pray for the intentions of the Pope (an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be are the usual prayers used), and be completely free of attachment to sin, even venial sin. The first one’s easy, the second, not so much. But the good news is that, even if you do not meet the conditions for a plenary indulgence, you may certainly receive a partial one.

It’s a good idea to have the intention of receiving all the indulgences that you can. Some people include this with the morning offering each day. Just tell Our Lord that you wish to receive all the indulgences that you can, even if you don’t know about them. And pray for the Holy Father every day, too.

I am sure you will receive many blessings from your time of adoration. Many people genuflect on both knees as they enter the pew. This was an old requirement which people have continued out of devotion, even though the rule has changed. You may genuflect on one knee before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, or both if you prefer. If the Host has been reposed in the tabernacle before you leave, then genuflect on one knee, as you normally would when you leave. You may say any prayers you wish, as long as you are quiet so as not to disturb others. One piece of advice I have always found valuable is to leave some time to simply look and Jesus and let Him look back at you. This is when He can speak to your heart, when you are quiet inside. Don’t miss this by thinking you must always be talking to Him. You know how you can just look at a sleeping baby with love? Do the same at adoration.

what does attachment to sin even venial mean exactly? I Have confessed and ave not committed sin since and I fight to stay free of it? I’am not sure how one is attached to sin. I may sin but Im not pleased with it by any means and i fight to free myself from it and since I have reconciliation and I have not sinned would that mean I am free from sin or is it kind of one of those loop holes where no one can ever be free from attachment of sin because we live in a world of sin and are born into it thus as long as we are human we have some sin on us even if just venial?

I have struggled to understand this as well, but I end up just telling God that I trust Him. Here’s an article that helped me understand a bit.

I have a quick quesiton about Adoration, and I didn’t want to start my own thread, so I thought I’d ask here. Is it okay to sit during adoration? I’ve recently heard that while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, you shouldn’t be sitting…is this true?

well I went to it last night for the first time. what I observed was that everyone would genuflect on both knees when the sacrament was present. I saw people sitting but most were kneeling. I knelt the entire time. We also had some girl come in and play Guitar and sing songs of praise. I wasn’t expecting that. Not everyone can kneel so I’m sure its not a requirement. Its all about Adoration. Jesus is happy to have you with him. Sit, meditate, listen, pray, read, pray the rosary, write. just being there is a wonderful and calming experience. I’m amazed why the place is so empty. I guess people are just to caught up in the world with worldly responsibility. I plan on doing this whenever possible.

I agree there is nothing more peaceful than basking in Jesus’ presence at Adoration. I also cannot believe the church isn’t packed. We have been very fortunate to have a priest who has started this for us, as we never had it before. He has it after Mass on Sunday as we are a very small parish, but it is really a shame how people trample out while Jesus is exposed - they obviously do not understand. It is sad that they have such a beautiful gift right in front of them, yet turn their backs on it to rush out. Only a small handful of people stay… What a perfect time to hear the Voice of the Savior, in the calm and still of the church. I do love it!

‘attachment to sin’ could mean you have a pet sin that you’re not really heartily sorry for and not firmly resolved to avoid and struggle against. ‘attachment to sin’ could also mean you have a recurring or habitual sin - the same one or same type that you keep doing over and over again. I’d say if you were free of both of these you’d probably be free of attachment to sin.
