Adoration Question

I switched to a new parish two weeks ago, and one of the things that drew me there was the perpetual adoration chapel. The chapel is kept locked and you need a door code to get in. I visited for a few minutes before Mass yesterday.

There was a book outside with a schedule of adorers, but the lights were off and no one was there. I realized why when I saw that there was no monstrance on the altar. The sanctuary light was burning, so He was present in the tabernacle. I confess I was a little disappointed. I know that Jesus was just as present there as He would’ve been in the monstrance, and I did stay for a few minutes and speak to Him. It just wasn’t what I had expected.

I asked a few people and was told that there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament only on Fridays. If that’s the case why keep the chapel locked and maintain a list of adorers? /the schedule was full for the day down to 10 p.m. when the Sacrament was to be reposed. But how could it be reposed if it was already in the Tabernacle? And even though someone was scheduled for the time I visited, no one else was there. It was kind of sad.

Is this usually how Perpetual Adoration is done…with Jesus in the Tabernacle most of the time?
 
All I can think is that the schedule you saw was for that coming Friday. The door would be locked with an access code for security reasons because the tabernacle is still vulnerable to breakins.
 
It could be that there are not enough people willing to commit to have it more. I think that the schedule might be for Fridays. Sign up so they know that there is at least one more person willing to commit. Sometimes there are people who want the chapel available when ever they want to go but they are not willing to commit to every Friday at 2AM Maybe if the Church gets more they can at least increase the time.
 
Weekly Adoration is fine, but it certainly isn’t “perpetual.” Perpetual means 24/7. 😉

Perpetual Adoration can be either Our Lord Reserved and Adored in the tabernacle or Exposed in a Monstrance with an adorer present at all times.
Your Church does not qualify on either count.
Not enough info to properly answer your question.
 
We regularly visit a church that has perpetual adoration. We usually visit in the wee hours. We are not the scheduled adorers. We too, use a code to access the church. Sometimes though, very rarely, a scheduled adorer cannot make it, on the scheduled time (maybe got the wrong timing, or didn’t wake up on time etc) then, in that case the monstrance is covered until the next person arrives. It happened on one occasion while we were there, so we were asked if we could stay till the next hour.

Another situation could be that during mass, the Blessed Sacrament is not exposed in the chapel because the sacrifice at Mass is of utmost importance, hence the Blessed Sacrament will not be exposed.*Being a few mins before that could be the case.
Perpetual adoration is 24/7
 
Thanks for your replies everyone! The sign outside the chapel door says “Perpetual Adoration Chapel”. Maybe at one time, it was perpetual, but for whatever reason they don’t have enough people to have it now. I’ll ask and find out if that’s the case.

Here’s the info from my church’s website. The second paragraph makes it sound like Exposition is every day, but the first paragraph is clear that it’s not. I guess that’s why I was confused.
Are you looking for some peace, serenity, and solitude in this crazy hectic world. Then come and spend one hour with Our Lord when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed during Eucharistic Adoration, every Friday in our Adoration Chapel, from 8:00 AM until 10 PM.

For those serious prayer warriors why not sign up on our volunteer sheet just outside the chapel, to come and pray at least one hour once a week in the chapel. When you make this commitment it is important to remember to find replacement if you cannot make your hour during the time the Blessed Sacrament is exposed.
