Adulation of Pope vs Adulation of Christian rock music

How do we explain the adulation of our Holy Father, something that some evangelicals call “worship” because it looks like what they do at “worship” concerts and events.

How do we explain that Catholics are not worshipping the Pope?

People rise to greet kings. They rise and play music when the POTUS arrives. They announce him in the house and everyone gives him much reverence. That doesn’t mean they worship them. People bow in many countries to others as a sign of respect. It’s still worship.

The Pope as the head of the church is a very important man. Whether we agree with him or not, we should respect him. We should respect the ‘Holy Spirit’ inside all of our brothers. But more especially we should show respect to the man who the bible says was given the keys.
 
Just my opinion, but I do believe some Catholics do take this a bit too far… BUT I agree with what the poster above me said.

Explain to them that the Pope is seen as the Vicar of the Church until Christ returns. He was given the keys to the kingdom. So we honor him and in doing so we show our respect and honor for Christ.
 
I think before you explain to someone what is or is not worship, you should ask them what they think worship is.

A common definition is:
wor·ship/ˈwərSHip/
Noun:
The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity

If we publicly proclaim that the pope is not a deity, we cannot --by definition-- be worshiping him. Worship is, by common definition and catholic definition, reserved for God alone.
 
Tell him some evangelicals are self worshiping when you watch how they prance around and yell at a sermon , not all but some. the benny hinns and rod parsley’s kind.
 
Adulation of rock musicians can be carried on a wave of emotion fuelled by excitement and stimulation of the senses through the fashions of the day for pleasurable sounds and images. It can be short-lived and leave a withdrawal - a compulsive desire to repeat the experience - and it can leave us feeling hungry when we return to our mundane lives.

‘Adulation’ is not a word that I would associate with someone given the responsibility of Christian leadership at the highest level - on the contrary - I feel more a sense of gratitude and prayer for the pope’s strength & wisdom. The Pope is a spiritual leader who does not indulge himself in the fashions of the day, musical or otherwise - someone to be admired in a respectful way, but principally someone who can show us the way to spiritual enrichment with the Lord God Almighty, through the Holy Spirit and the passion and death of Jesus Christ - these are the Ones who should be given the adulation - the Pope is the chosen messenger, one of us. Adulation of Jesus, the Spirit and the Father is not short-lived, and does not leave a withdrawal effect - it will not leave us hungry.

Thank you. Good call. We must first agree on a definition. I have learned from experience that protestants generally don’t use dictionaries. 😉
