I was debating with a friend and need some Catholic advice. If two catholics are dating and they are at least 60 years of age, is it a sin if they engage in premarital sex?
My take is yes It still is a sin in spite of their age. Age is not the issue here even though as senior citizens they need not worry about procreation.

Is the friend Catholic? Why does he/she believe that it is a sin before the age of 60 or so? Sex is not only about procreation. It is the culmination of the Sacrament of matrimony. Each act is an affirmation of those vows…no vows, no sex.

You’ve come to the right place with your questions.

Your take is correct.

Fornication is sin no matter who does it. God doesn’t grade on a curve. It’s a mortal sin. Unrepented mortal sin will keep you from the Eucharist. Unrepented means you haven’t turned from it.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, both widowers are Catholic. But the male of the two said it is ok at their age since they need not worry about children. The women believes him. I told my friend I would research this but could find nothing regarding thisexcept for young adult singles. I really wanted to be certain before I pass the information on to her. AGain thank you.

The Sixth Commandment does not have an expiration date.

Fornication is fornication, no matter one’s age.

Thank you to all who were kind enough to answered my question. I was on the right track and you helped me confirm this.

To Bama Rider…don’t be ridiculous.

yes it is always a sin to have sex outside a valid marriage
the reason for avoiding sex is not to avoid pregnancy but because it is a good that belongs exclusively to marriage.
