How “easy” was it to receive financial aid (not loans) and/or scholarships for you? How did you finance your decision to go back to school?

Are you a graduate or undergraduate?

When I decided to quit my job and go to grad school I received tuition plus a stipend that covered my costs. Many grad students also work as teaching assistants or research assistants and receive aid that way.

Googling scholarships returning adults turned up a lot of hits. Your college or public library should have guides to scholarships where you can see what may be available.

I’m an adult who recently returned to school.

If I understand correctly, you do not want loans? It would be very difficult to fund your education with Pell grants and scholarships alone. Are you working now? Married or single? Military veteran?

To give you an idea of whether or not you would get aid, I’ll use myself as an example:

I made a little over $40k last year (so I made less than the state average income). I’m a single male living by myself (in the DC area no less). I did not qualify for any aid or grants from the school; all of my financial aid came in the form of Stafford loans.

You can go to the FAFSA website and fill out an “estimator” that can tally up your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC). Schools use that to determine how much aid you qualify for, and if you are a good candidate to receive it.

There are some sites out there where you can search and apply for scholarships, but the process is long and the competition is very tough.

Good luck to you.

applied for and received a grad assistantship that paid half the cost, and employer paid the rest because I sold the proposal to the employer on how my degree could help them. got the GA because of the unique skills I brought from my employer that related to the degree program. this was in my 40s.

also got my undergrad after I married and had kids, student loans and scholarships combined, at that time however the entire financial aid apparatus was much different than today. key was that at the time aid package included child care, which enabled me to work by FT job, and again my employer, because I made a good case for it, helped fund part of my tuition.
