Advent season?

All the mainline do:
Lutherans
Methodists
Presbyterians
Episcopalians
United Church of Christ
Some Mennonites…at least around here they do
Those are the ones that come to mind.
 
Thanks Brian! That is very nice to know. It is a wonderful season. I remember my boss told me she was a Methodist. I probably can bring this up for some nice conversation with her. 🙂

We light a candle each week and for the first time ever our family does it this Sunday. Heres hoping the kids act well!
Some churches probably do more with it than others do. Methodists vary. Some liturgical; some very contemporary. I am traditional so I think it is wonderful.
 
Tonight, some of the Religious Education classes at our church made sets of 4 candles out of color papers. The kids really enjoyed it.

I did it last year for the first time. This year, I haven’t got chance to do it yet and will be the first year ever to celebrate Christmas alone. I am wondering what it will be like for me.
 
I’m a new Catholic, and am still trying to learn and understand the liturgical calendar. Can you suggest any literature (or website links) on how we should be celebrating the advent season properly? Are there certain traditions that should be done in Catholic home? I read about some things to do with the family like a Jesse Tree, the nativity scene, etc.

I really appreciate your help and guidance.

Advent is also celebrated by lots of Evangelical churches, it certainly has been in every one I’ve ever attended at least.

The practice of making and lighting candles in the Advent Wreath began in Northern Europe and the practice as we have it today appears to be an entirely common historical practice among Catholics as well as Lutherans?

And that Martin Luther is (possibly apocryphally) credited with bringing the first Christmas tree into a home?
 
Thank you again for all of the valuable information! I have another question semi-related to this topic. Where can I find a nativity scene that doesn’t have the Baby Jesus already attached to the manger??? I love the idea of setting up the nativity as a journey throughout Advent and Christmas, but I can’t seem to find any that would allow me to add Jesus at Christmas. ( I don’t have children yet. However, when I do, I think it is a neat idea to have them “add straw” to the manger while waiting for Jesus to come on Christmas.) Thank you again for your help!

This is a fairly new concept, but a good one.

Lent is being adopted by many evangelicals and fundamentalists.

I had a baptist tell me two years ago about how his preacher had “created” a time of preparation for Easter, where they would pray and fast like Jesus did in the desert.

I have a little tiny nativity set that all figures stuck into one piece. 😃

Depending on how much you want to spend on the nativity, there are some bigger one that has Jesus statue not being part of the manger. Most of other sets have Jesus with the manger. I think you can create a manger by straws throughout this time, and when Christmas comes, put Jesus with attached manger on top of the straws.

Some nativities are so expensive, but if you have time, go shopping at a mall; look around you might have some big ones made in China and a lot cheaper.

It looks like you can remove Jesus from the manger on this item:

but it is 8’’.
 
Absolutely! My father-in-law is a Baptist minister and he celebrates it at church every Sunday!

Well yes, of course. Though the more “low church” you are, the more likely it is that you either won’t use the term or will in fact celebrate Christmas and call it Advent.

My Methodist pastor (actually he’s United Brethren serving in a small rural Methodist church) celebrated Advent on the First Sunday, and yesterday moved on to Christmas (in terms of the hymn selections at least–I play the piano and tried to compensate by playing Advent music for the prelude and offertory). But he does use the lectionary, so his sermon was Advent-themed.

When I was a little girl, I grew up going to a Methodist Church. I didn’t realize it at the time, but we were celebrating advent. I remember the first Sunday (of Advent) in our Sunday School class, we would create a chain made out of construction paper with 24/25 (I can’t remember) links that would be used to countdown until Christmas. I think many protestant churches celebrate it, but without the official title in some cases.
