Advent Wreath and Christmas Candle

A question came up after Mass this morning…When must the Advent wreath be removed from the Altar…and How long does the Christmas candle stay after Advent. Can someone share their knowledge on this subject.

Since there is nothing that says you must have an Advent wreath, I have never seen any rules pertaining to it (other than the colour of the candles).

Ours is never placed in the sanctuary, but just in front of the left hand pews where there is a vacant space that is normally occupied by plants. If it stays in the church for Christmas the colored candles are replaced by all white ones and the wreath is moved to the narthex where it stays until after the Baptism of the Lord. This year, the wreath was removed from the church for Christmas.

Well Advent ended Monday afternoon. The Christ candle was not originally part of the Advent Wreath. However it would seem the Christ Candle should remain for the Octave of Christmas.

The Christmas season ends with the Baptism of the Lord, on the Sunday after The Epiphany, on 13 January 2008. So this year there are 20 days of Christmas. A crib and Christmas tree are discussed in the 2002 Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, but I could not find anything about a Christmas candle.

there is no rule, it is an optional decoration, but if used all 4 candles and the white Christ candle are lit throughout the Christmas season, so it will be removed when the rest of the decorations are removed after the Epiphany (or Baptism of the Lord) depends on when your parish actually does this task.
