We are in RCIA, (wife 2 girls and myself) we have started the tradition of the advent wreath.
We have found many different meanings for each candle. Could someone clarify the meaning and prayers for each candle. We want to teach our little girls the correct Catholic meaning of each candle. Any assistance would be helpful and appreciated.

The candles, individually, don’t HAVE a meaning – we usually read the Gospel reading for each Sunday when we light each week’s candle. There are Advent guides that will help with this – our parish hands out the Little Blue Book, and Magnificat publishes an Advent Guide too.

If you’re asking why one candle is ROSE (not pink), it’s because the day’s Mass begins with the the word “Rejoice” (Gaudete in Latin) so that candle isn’t penitential purple. The priest’s vestments will be rose colored that day as well.

Prophesy (Anticipation)
Hope
Joy (Gaudete SUnday)
Love

They correspond to the readings.

Some Wreaths have a white Christ candle in the center to be lit at Christmas.

•The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the “Prophet’s Candle”
reminding us that Jesus is coming.

•The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the “Bethlehem Candle”
reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

•The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the “Shepherd’s Candle”
reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus.

•The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace with the “Angel’s Candle”
reminding us of the message of the angels: “Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.”

Happy Saint Nicholas Day.
Hope this helped

This is great – my family emphasized the readings when I was growing up, but neither of my parents ever said anything about what the candles symbolized.

I love learning new things!
