How do Traditional Roman Catholics fast during Advent and X-mas? I know about the Nativity Fast for the Eastern Catholics but are Roman Catholics lazy or do they fast as well?

I didn’t grow up in England with any Christmas fast but since I met my Polish wife I have joined the Christmas Eve fast and the food they eat in the evening but I draw the line at cold fish.

Uncharitable remark.

Fasting by Catholics is required only two days in the year and they are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We also fast for at least one hour before receiving Communion.

Fasting any other time is not required although voluntary fasting can be done anytime but to call Catholics lazy for not fasting when they are not required to fast is over the line.

I don’t recall any special Advent fast from my childhood, other than the fact the Friday abstinence from meat, and abstinence on the vigil of Christmas were still observed. We focused more on good deeds, with the help of an advent calendar, straws in the manger etc.

My I ask on what convoluted basis you equate a different fasting discipline with laziness? and why fasting miraculously makes you “not lazy?” May I further inquire your purpose in making that back handed insult in the first place against fellow Catholics?

While fasting is only required now for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, back in the days before Vatican II, there was some fasting during Advent.

According to my TLM missal published in 1958, the Advent Emberdays (the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after December 13 - the Feast of St. Lucy) required Fasting & Partial Abstinence (“On days of Partial Abstinence flesh meat, soup or gravy made from meat are permitted once a day at the principal meal.”) except for the Friday, which required Fasting & Abstinence.

December 24 (the Vigil of the Nativity) required Fasting & Abstinence. That’s why Italians - to this day - have seven fish on Christmas Eve. The Eucharistic Fast before Midnight Mass was 4 hours.

I must say, even traditional Latin Rite Catholic fasting rules aren’t as rigorous as those in the East. I wouldn’t call it laziness however. There are other ways of practicing penance than fasting, such as praying the Seven Penitential Psalms or going to Confession.

Members of various orders follow the Rule of their order. There are many orders throughout the world, I don’t believe there is a consolidated list anywhere of who does what fasting throughout the year.

The wife and I Fast on all Fridays of ther year except on Solemnities, all Ember days and on on Wednesdays during Advent and Lent.

We don’t much pay attention to what is 'required" but tend to follow our traditions.
