What do other faith traditions do in Advent? Does Advent play a part in your faith traditions?

In the Methodist Church I attended, they did Advent; the candles, the readings, etc… pretty much as it is done in the CC if what I’m reading about your traditions is accurate.

Usual comment about Anglicans.

That being said, firmly nailed to the liturgical year, we recited the Great Litany last Sunday. Advent has begun.

Sing a verse of a hymn, light a candle, continue the service. I suppose we’ll repeat next week.

I’m not great about doing things for Advent, but I thought a Friday-without-IDFs (Internet discussion forums) would be a nice idea.

(Note: In my time zone it’s now Saturday so it’s okay to get my “fix” now. :))

We simply do Christmas type celebrations all December. Carols, nativity, Christmas sermons, parties, etc.

My own experienc is that Methodists Anglicans and Lutherans celebrate Advent

I remember in the church of my childhood the advent candles would be lit and maybe a verse read but I don’t recall ever really knowing what the season of advent meant. It wasn’t until I became Catholic that I truly understood the period of preparation and penance prior to the birth of the Christ Child, Son of God.

How long is western Advent?
Between four to five weeks for Catholics. Advent always starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. There is the first Sunday, second Sunday, third Sunday, fourth Sunday, and then the remaining time until Christmas, whether it falls on the very Monday after the fourth Sunday of advent or if it’s full week later on the following Sunday.

I love Advent. The time to reflect on what it was like for the Israelites prior to Christ’s coming. The waiting, and waiting, and praying and praying. For generations.

I reflect on the thought, “do I experience that kind of anticipation, that they had, that they prayed for?”…

And then I reflect on His second coming, and how He has already come into, and remains, in my life, now.

Advent is beautiful if one is open to it’s mystery. The Christmas novena is very helpful to me with this kind of meditation. “Hail and blessed be…”
