This discussion reminds me of the saying that “The best offense is a good defense.” We as Catholics have a personal obligation to make sure we know and study our faith so we are able to defend it. I am a “cradle Catholic,” and while I never left the Church, I realized I needed to be able to explain to others some of the things that I accept as true. In that sense I have had a strong reversion and renewal to the Catholic faith. The more I study it, the stronger I become in faith, and the more I love my Catholic faith. Adventists do have part of the truth, and I admire their devotion to that truth.
But as Catholics, we have the whole truth, and need to share it with others. The truth speaks for itself. It is very easy to discredit Ellen White and many of her teachings, as well as many other Adventist teachings (such as their official teaching on abortion, which clearly violates God`s commandment "Thou shall not kill.). Many others have already done this (highlighted the errors of Ellen White and Adventist doctrine in general).
What I think needs improvement, is Catholic responses to Adventists questions, and evangelic material that counters their false teachings on Catholicism. Thus, we need Catholic materials that correct their misunderstands about Catholicism. We also need materials that charitably explain why some of their teachings are not correct. And we need to respond, again in a charitable way, when they make claims about the Catholic faith that are not accurate.
Charitable and passive are not the same thing. We as a Church need to fight back strongly, but do so in a loving way. I am still searching for the best way to do this.
Some Adventists are overtly lying and willingly act in a deceitful manner. But most have sincere hearts, and are simply trying to bring others to Christ. But we as Catholics, need to show others the whole truth that can only be found in the Catholic Church. That is our duty. We have such a precious gift and are so blessed to be called to Catholicism, and we need to share this with others.
Since this is a Catholic Forum, we have the expectation of being able to discuss our faith freely with each other and not have it attacked by others. We have a right to be angry when others spread lies about the Catholic faith. And we have a duty to respond. But at the same time, we still need to be gracious toward others. Jesus taught us to love our enemies and to pray for them. This extends to enemies of Catholicism as well.
Sincerely,
