Advice about my son's baptism

I have a friend who is “lightly” Catholic who will have her baby born 6 months before mine will be born. She wants our kids to be baptised together at the same church. I wasn’t sure if that would be allowed… I guess I have to ask the priest.

Our daughter was baptized when she was almost 5 months old, and our priest was fine with that. As far as baptizing them together, others here have mentioned “communal” baptisms that take place during Masses, so I would think you could work that out with your friend.

From Canon Law…Can. 867 §1. Parents are obliged to take care that infants are baptized in the first few weeks; as soon as possible after the birth or even before it, they are to go to the pastor to request the sacrament for their child and to be prepared properly for it.

The child is now healthy and not at undue risk.

What is required for salvation? BAPTISM.
Why do parents feel it is ok to postpone this so they can have a big party or something else?
And why many Priests dont enforce Canon Law I will never understand!

Baptism is VERY important, if you dont understand just how important it is then read the CCC.

I thought it was humourous that I had a baptism of desire and babies really can’t have that, and therefore the difference in urgency of baptisms.

I do not need to be catechized on the importance of baptism. Calm down.

Hi everyone,

My associate pastor waived the baptism class requirement for us, so we’re all set to go for this Sunday.

However, if I put the baptism off a few weeks (or more), we can have a decent baptism party. What do you think? Is it worth putting off his baptism three weeks toa month and a half? Or should we just make do with a few friends coming over? One friend told us not to worry, we could put it off until he was two if we wanted to. How urgent is baptism for a healthy baby?

He was waived from having to take the baptism prepartation class…the child is to be baptized this Sunday and he wants to possibly postpone the baptism for a 3 weeks to a month and a half for a party.

This is not about waiting to take a class this is about waiting to have a bigger party

The Baptism is the most important thing, sure - it is cause for celebration.

How about cake and coffee in the Parish Hall after the Baptism? Sketty, Cupcakes and punch at your apartment for your family, Godparents and the Priest? Pizza or McDonalds for everyone? Do not let the inability to pay for a huge party stand in the way of baptism.

Don’t worry about a big party. Have the baptism as soon as it can be scheduled.

Hi: we’ve never been to an infant baptism before, so we don’t know how important it is to have a get-together afterward, or how big that get-together ought to be. We live in a pretty tiny apartment, so we’d either have to limit our guest list pretty severely or go to a restaurant.?

With my son, a healthy nearly full term baby, we waited 2.5 months. He was baptized with two other babies (their mothers were and are close friends to this day) We went out to lunch with our families and that evening we had a party (it was Christmas time) for all three babies…kind of a potluck with all our friends…a long but fun day.
My daughter was born 2 months prematurely. She was baptized in the NICU wearing a lovely white baby t-shirt that she kept falling through the neck of. When she was 6 months old our pastor invited us to bring her in what would have been her baptismal gown (and her grandma;s bonnet) when he baptized two other little girls. At the end of the baptism he introduced Megan to the congregation and explained her story. She had just gotten out of the hospital after being treated for bacterial meningitis so she had a pretty hard start in life. Afterwards, we had an open house party (it was Christmas time again).
As they say on those sports commercials…“just do it!” Then have a big celebration when you feel ready. When Meg came home from the hospital the first time we had serious restriction on where we could take here (almost no where) and who she could be around (pretty much just us!)

Interesting you should ask! Anthony was baptised this morning. We called off the party–good thing, too, because we had an ice storm last night. So it wouldn’t have turned out anyway.

But the Baptism went beautifully. Anthony smiled immediately after his Baptism, which, according to Fr., means he’s either meant to be a good Christian or a swimmer.

I’m very greatful to his godparents, we have no Catholic relatives or relatives interested in supporting our conversion, so we chose some of our new friends as godparents. They really stepped up to the plate.

Congratulations! A tiny new Christian!

Aren’t Baptisms just beautiful? We have eight kids now, and still every time, I just beam my way through the whole thing.

Baptizing these wee little babies just makes it so transparent that God’s sanctifying grace is a completely gratuitous, unmerited gift to us.
