Hey everyone, I am just in need of a little advice.
My first semester in college has come to a close, but I have experienced a few problems. It basically goes like this: I have a pretty small group of friends that attend my college that I have known since high school. I don’t hang usually out with them outside of school because I don’t like the decisions they make during this time. But I do like to talk to them about school and catch up with them. However, there are often times when they say some crude things (always as jokes, you know how teenage guys are) and it is always super awkward. I am a really shy person, and they know this, but I feel like I should do something. I don’t want to ignore them, but I don’t know how to explain to them what they are saying is wrong without getting made fun of.

Also, this has nothing to do with my friends, but with a paper I wrote. I recently wrote a paper on why Planned Parenthood should be defunded and we are allowed to submit any of our works into the student publication book for next semester. I was wondering if I should try and submit it, even with the negative backlash I may receive. Maybe I could just turn in it without my name?

Thanks, love you all

You don’t have to concern yourself about being made fun of. A polite reminder such as “You probably are not aware that you are being offensive?”, or something similar can be said calmly. That is a form of correction done peacefully. If they decide to make fun of you because of that, they are not your friends. Perhaps you will have planted a seed and they may ponder what you said.

About the paper on why Planned Parenthood should be defunded…that is great! More young people should be outspoken about such things. Stay close to our Lord, who also had a lot of negative backlash. He will help you endure!
Such things help me learn how much he suffered from how others spoke to Him.

I don’t know what to tell you about the paper. Not an easy decision to make.

As for your friends, the most effective way I’ve found to handle jokes like that is to simply not react. Just look straight at the guy who told it, no expression necessary. The message will get through.
