Advice evangelizing baptist friend

Ive been having conversations with my coworker for about 3-4 months now.
I’ve successfully dissuaded him that Catholics aren’t all going to hell like he had been taught. We’ve also reach points where he can no longer find defense in the bible against my arguments for catholicism. But still he has issues with Mary and the pope as well as confession. We’ve talked at length about these issues to no avail.

I think he possibly “would” convert but I need some prayers and advice. So please pray for the holy spirit to guide him and me, and
Lease gimme some tips!
 
Google “Catholic Cheat Sheet” and go four or five down. It’ll simply say Christopher Wong. It’s some of the more common protestant hangups on Catholicism and gives a ton of Scriptural support from everything ranging from Papal Infallibility to Mary to Confession. It’s helped me in my attempts at apologetics over the last few years.

Lots of biblical suport for our doctrines and beliefs. You might also want to search for these issues on the catholic.com home page search bar. Print out the praticular things he objects to and then go through it with him. You also might want to look into getting the book Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating. Good luck.
 
My mother’s family are strongly Baptist. After getting together with them last week (over a tragedy, sadly), I’d say the strongest witness is action. They were impressed that our church is “Bible-based” and that our mom’s group rallies for pro-life causes, stepped in to help me and my kids when we had to rush out of town, and that we do work for the community. What is the St. Augustine quote about the Gospel? “Use words when necessary.” That goes a long way with many good Protestants.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Karl Keating’s “Catholicism and Fundamentalism” from the 1980’s you’ll learn a lot about the origins of many Protestant misconceptions about Catholics.

I think most of the time you are just planting seeds. Arguing points and making the other person wrong usually irritates them more than opens them up. Fulton Sheen once said, “Win an argument. Lose a soul.”

Just give them something to chew on.

I usually only give someone information if they ask me about it…and they always do because everyone is naturally curious about Catholicism. After that, I leave them in the hands of the Holy Spirit until they get curious again.

People are much more likely to be receptive to what you have to say if you are doing it on their terms.
 
Preach the Gospel always and when necessary use words.

You been given some great practical advice that you should definitely look up and apply.

But you also need to remember that maybe your job is the seed planting. Someone else may be the one to see those seeds come to fruition. Pray that if it is within His will that you see this one come to fruition but know that it literally could be years from now. Don’t stop. Keep doing what you are doing! But just be prepared for it to take longer than you might pray for.

Just ask him repeatedly, about the how the Bible came to us, and why they rely to the Canon of the Church. Dont argue with the protestant brothers by using Bible verses, your discussion will just a wasting of time, always rely to the history of the Church and the Bible and use extrabiblical writings like the writings of saint ignatius of antioch, and many more.
 
I used to be a devout Southern Baptist. Baptists are Word people. Being able to discuss scripture intelligently and accurately is tantamount to gaining credibility with a strong Baptist believer. Church history and Biblical history may help as well. However, I do not recommend using extra-Biblical resources are another poster mentioned, unless you plan to provide irrefutable evidence that those resources are just as reliable as the Bible.

Agreed Journey! Although as Catholics we should all know the Bible well. We have a lot of work correcting many falsehoods that Protestants and the like teach their parishioners.
