I’m in the process of grappling with disordered eating and was hoping I could have some tips on how best to tackle the Ash Wednesday fast. I did talk to my own priest about it, and he explained that we are allowed to have two small meals/one big meal. It still feels really daunting to me though, so I would definitely appreciate any extra tips/advice. Thank you!

Talk with whatever medical professional is treating you for your eating disorder about the circumstances under which you can observe any kind of fast at present, explaining what Catholics mean by a fast.

Then be obedient to what you are told. I don’t know of a priest who would allow you to do anything else. You have a serious medical condition. Submission to treatment is your opportunity for self-denial. (Abstinence from meat, on the other hand, should not pose a problem.)

Speak to your doctor and your therapist.

If it is not a good idea for you to fast, then don’t. Those with health concerns, mental and physical, need not fast.

Please follow the advice of your doctor and therapist. You have a medical issue, and your priest is not a doctor and cannot advise you on how to eat.

Need not fast and, in some cases, should not fast.

Please don’t do anything that could possibly set back your recovery. God would not want you to do something that could be harmful for you. As others have said, the advice of your healthcare professionals is of the utmost importance. It sounds like your priest perhaps doesn’t fully understand your situation. If it feels daunting, that’s probably a good indication that it’s not a good idea for you. I have some idea of what you are going through, so please be assured of my prayers and best wishes.
