Ok, this is what happened. It was late at night, i was checking my email before i went to sleep. I found myself then looking at movie trailers, then on ifilm.com looking at the girls page. Then I wound up on a porn website from a link on the ifilm page. I saw pornography, but in all honesty i didnt want to see it, i really just enjoyed the thrill of doing something i knew i shouldnt, not the actual pornography. I did not masturbate either (which has been a habit of mine for a few years now). I usually can not go a full two weeks without porn or masturbating, does this situation warrant a mortal sin or was it venial?

Thanks for any help or advice

I would advise you discuss this with a priest the next time you go to confession. Meditate on why you enjoy the thrill of doing something that orients you, even if it is just temporarily, away from God.

Also, looking at porn again could help lead you back into doing it all of the time. In my own situation, I was told that weighing myself (which would lead me back into a really nasty eating disorder) is sinful. It would also be the same for an alchoholic taking a drink after a period of abstinance. Please mention this the next time you go to confession. And congratulations on abstaining for so long… 👍

God Bless!

What ericka is talking about are the near occasions of sin. If we are sincere about avoiding our known temptations to sin, then we put our money with our mouth is, and do not “get a thrill” out of lurking within near occasions of sin, **including when we encounter those occasions accidentally. ** Just bring it to confession, to discuss, as someone else said.

memphisman,

do yourself a favor…in addition to going to confession…

and tell yourself it was indeed a mortal sin.

your actions, in my opinion, constitute a vice (bad habit) and a venial sin which clearly has the capacity to easily draw you closer to lust. Lust is grave matter, no matter how you slice it.

because these actions could quickly lead you to grave sin, it is best to just consider the act itself grave.

add in your knowledge of the fact that lust is a grave matter (which I presume you know)…and then add in your full consent, which you already said you gave…and there you go…mortal sin.

I’m not trying to judge you. Believe me. I’ve been where you are. I have to fight still to stay away from where you are.

Any habit (vice) that you act on which exposes lust to you (pornography in this case), treat that as mortal sin

then get to confession…and when you confess it…say EXACTLY what it is…use the word “pornography”…don’t mask it as “impure thoughts” etc. I confessed to this for months, and it wasn’t until I faced up to the evil, called it exactly what it was, that I was able to start making big strides in defeating it.

so far, so good. praise God.

God Bless you.

Porn and (or) masturbation CAN be a mortal sin and are always a matter for confession. I have no idea in the world how single people are able to life a successfully chaste life, but I have great admiration for those who do!

Sounds like venial, however it is a strong occasion of sin for you. I’d take it to the confessional, not due to mortal sin but for the grace that you receive from confession and the advice that you will most probably receive from the priest.

It’s easier once you realize how bad it was. Having grown up in a Post Vat2/Less Catechism-centric Catholic school environment, we were never taught that sort of thing. It’s only now that I’m in my late 20s that I’m finally learning the things I should’ve.

. . . not that it’s easy mind you, especially with the internet saying ‘Here I am!.’ ;^) If you have someone you feel comfortable with being an Accountable-a-buddy with, that’d likely be helpful (I wouldn’t know, though :^P).
