Hey, I’ve been having Scrupulosity with intrusive thoughts. I’ve been taking forty milligrams of flouxetine and I need to refill my resperdal. What are some thoughts on how to deal with scrupulosity? What should I avoid and not avoid? I go to weekly confession (So I can die in a state of grace to the Lord) Never had communion in awhile though.

Stop going to confession every week…I know I know that sounds bad. If it helps you by all means go but if you are scrupulous maybe its not a good idea. Recognize what a mortal sin and a venial sin is. No really figure it out…If you are committing mortal sins so much that you NEED to go to confession weekly there is something else wrong (especially if its the same sin). Push confession out to two weeks and keep track of what you are doing and the sins you commit. Unless you are committing mortal sin every week or daily id say you need to wean yourself off this stuff a bit. A big part of scrupulosity is the overuse of the confessional (if that’s possible) I wouldn’t say this to your average non scrupulous person BTW. I certainly battle this occasionally so im giving you ideas on what has worked for me here. I’m sure your going to get a large amount of recommendations here so this is just what works for me and may not be the best thing for you so please remember that. What im not saying is don’t go to confession if you need to go. What I am saying is frequenting the confessional is a sign your scrupulous.

I’m sure you are going to hear that its “really hard to commit a mortal sin” I’ve seen it here a million times. Don’t fall for that its really easy to commit mortal sin. Especially for those who are very aware of their sins.

Receive the Body & Blood of Christ more often. It is our spiritual food - our spiritual nutrition, if you will. You are becoming undernourished.

I’d set up an appointment with a priest that you trust. Go talk to the priest with your concerns about your scrupulosity. Also, your priest will help you figure out how often you should go to confession. (Generally speaking, scrupulous people shouldn’t go to weekly confession. Of course, there are exceptions e.g. dealing with impurity addictions. That’s why it’s important for you to set up an appointment with a priest so he can guide you)

I went through a spell of this just after I got engaged and work was very stressful and intense. I managed to overcome it by letting my intrusive thoughts in and running their course, rather than panicking when they came into my head and trying to push them out again.

I was amazed how fast they disappeared if I just let them float around in my brain a while and then fade out!

Read about Neurolinguistic programming too - I know that has helped a few people with OCD and Pure O

Ask our Lady for peace and stay close to Jesus in the Sacraments, including especially the Eucharist. I also reccomend the Scrupulous Anonymous website.

Regarding intrusive thoughts, be calm. If you are spending all of your time.and energy on banishing those thoughts, you’ll be spending your time and energy on utterly unworthy things. Give those thoughts to our Lord and go on with truly worthy tasks. Your brain actually generates intrusive thoughts so that you can obsess and freak out about them. If some thought pops into your brain, let it pass, as it likely will. Don’t think too much about your thinking, but rather think about our Lord and others.

Remember that God is merciful…he wants to forgive you and will! Every morning I pray that He searches me for forgotten sin and forgives me. I know that He does simply by my asking ! I love the prayer “Oh Sacred Heart of Jesus, I Place My Trust in Thee” and when I pray it then I know that I need not worry about anything because He knows my heart. Your heart can’t lie and God never stops loving us…scrupulosity doesn’t exist in that knowkedge.

My advice is to seek to do what you believe God wants you to do in each decision you make. Scruples can be a way of drawing us closer to God by getting us to stop doing what is merely permissible and to start doing what is best.

Call upon Mary, Our Mother of Good Counsel, and upon Saint Alphonsus, patron saint of scrupulous souls.

As for intrusive thoughts, turn your mind to Jesus and Mary and don’t panic. Pray to Saint Joseph, Terror of the demons. Tell God that you hate these thoughts and tell yourself that these thoughts do not belong to you.
