Advice for further reading in Philosophical Theology

Could anybody recommend me some good texts for some further study of this subject?
I’ve read some Augustine and quite a lot of Aquinas already.

I’d say some intermediate level literature would be most useful. 🙂

Fr. Copleston’s history of philosophy is the best I can think of.
 
I haven’t read anything by him but De Deo Abscondito, but one of my Theology professors enjoys Nicholas of Cusa. Unfortunately I can’t recommend any works by him as I have a huge back log of works to read before I manage to find out exactly why my Professor likes him so much :o
 
Are you going to be like certain Old Testament figures and live to be 900 years old? Then do you really have time for all this study of philosophical theology study?
 
The best work of philosophical theology is Jacques Derrida’s ‘Sauf le Nom’, an essay in the short book “On the Name”, in the form of a discussion of Angelus Silesius’ mystical writings. I promise that it is a life changing text!

You might try A Manual of Modern Scholastic Philosophy Vol 2 by Cardinal Mercier. It can be read on line, on Google Books or Archive.org. Vol 1 dealing with Natural Philosophy and Metaphysics is also on line. I would also recommend Thomistic Metaphysics by Charles A Heart. Also check what Etien Gilson wrote on the subject. None of these are easy! Of course there is always the Summa Theologiae which is also on line.

It’s not clear from your request what you are seeking. Philosophical theology is a big, big category. For example, do you want the classics of Catholic Theology leading up to scholasticism, Aquinas, and neo-scholasticism? Or do you want 20th century Catholic theologians such as Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Bernard Lonergan?

I second the suggestion of Copleston’s survey of the history of philosophy as a great summary. Note that it is a survey of the history of “philosophy,” not philosophical theology, although there is a substantial overlap.

If you prefer pre-Vatican II theology, I’d suggest Etienne Gilson, who wrote about Catholic theology of the medieval period, Augustine, Bonaventure and especially Aquinas.

You can get the Elements of a Christian Philosophy by Gilson and the Philosophy of God by Renard from WorldCat and they may be purchased reasonably through Amizon and other sites. You can search these yourself. I have a copy of both of the latter and I am reading the Elements of a Christian Philosophy for about the fourth time. Oddly I have never opened the one by Renard. But I will look at it today.

I had a chance to look at The Philosophy of God and The Philosophy of Being by Henri Renard S.J.and both are excellent. He explains the subjects clearly without any extraneous verbage. I also looked at An Introduction to Natural Theologhy by Maurice R Holloway S.J. and it is excellent. I think for the first time I really understand Thomas’ Prima Via. I didn’t look into where it could be found. But you can usually find these old texts somewhere.
 
If you are up for something more philosophical and done from a modern perspective, I would recommend anything by Alasdair MacIntyre.
