I need strong Catholic advice about how to keep my son from being tempted with his girlfriend. They SWEAR they are not being sexually intimate, but they are very “cuddly” and I remember how I felt when I was that age. They always ask to sleep together and say it is no big deal because they are not sexually active. While this may be true, I know it is soooooo dangerous because of where it can lead. Any help with scriptures, church teachings, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
They’re acting like children.
I could quote the Bible and the Church but it’s not necessary because common sense does the trick.
I have an idea. If you happen to get them together some time in a conversation, ask them if they’re going to split the cost of an abortion or if the girl’s parents are going to foot the bill.
I know it’s an ugly and even rude question, but it highlights just how short-sighted they’re being. For example, they SWEAR they are not being sexually intimate, but hey, they love each other, don’t they? And how do you *really *express your love? By having sex. And what’s it called when sex works correctly, the way it was intended to? It’s called a baby. So how do we express our love without, as Our Leader once said, “being punished with a baby”? Contraception!
So the next stage is they are going to SWEAR they are using protection. And then the day will come when the ONE time they “forget” or they have an “accident”, sex will work the way it’s intended to and…
So here’s the contingency plan. First moral dilemma is whether to play husband and wife and cuddle. Then whether to have sex. Then whether to contracept. Then whether to have the baby. Then whether to keep it. Then whether to marry.
Anyway, if anyone thinks I’m overreacting, keep in mind first, that these kids will be faced with each and every one of those moral dilemmas one after the other until and unless they start acting like responsible adults with a plan. If they are not really envisioning this relationship as leading toward lifelong marriage, then they need to cool it and go back to being “just friends”, if that is possible. And second, we have all seen this story played out countless times in other people’s lives, and these kids have no reason to think their story will turn out any different. I, for one, see no difference. They are making the exact same mistakes the rest of them made.
Does it sound like I’ve been there and done that? Witnessed it up close in my friends’ lives? And among us adults, who hasn’t? Let’s cut to the chase and quit pretending we should deal with things as they come. We all know where this is headed, so let’s perform the first three Spiritual Works of Mercy all at once.
So my advice is to come right out and tell them that you are not paying for the abortion under any circumstances.
