If someone can tell me that a posting similar to this exists, I sheepishly apologize in advance, and hopefully the moderator can dump this in another thread.
So the present pastor of my former Protestant church treated me to dinner recently…he knows that although I am now a Catholic, I love the members of my old church (I still write about 500-600 letters to them annually)…and he praises God for that. I think He also loves me very much too.
So he was telling me (in confidence, which explains the deliberate vagueness of this post, and I probably won’t entertain any questions about this) that he is struggling with the fact that he wants to lead his church on ideas of grace (for the glory of God), but his superior seems a bit legalistic (for the glory of the people in the church).
Now the most frequent accusation thrown at the Catholic Church is that she is legalistic, relies on works-salvation, and all the false accusations you could possibly think of. The pastor himself does not think of Catholics as heretics, but he says that his theological differences with Catholicism are irreconciliable (we traded lots of jokes on this…we really do get along!).
So I wanted to write him an email explaining my prayerful sympathy for his burden/situation, but I also wanted to throw in (not in a wild in-your-face or ridiculous Protestants-are-damned way, of course) a small piece about how Catholicism is arguably the most God-glorying and not person-glorifying religion on this planet. How would I phrase it? Feedback would be so appreciated!
