(Disclaimer: I tried explaining my life story but can’t seem to put it in words. I apologize for any confusion.)

I’m a 20 year old male college student and I’ve been struggling with a variety of things. Same sex attraction, masturbation, pornography, depression, and social anxiety. I tend to think they are all inter-related. I really struggle with my self-worth sometimes.

I’m trying to type this and my mind is going everywhere at the moment. I really wanted to do this today and get everything put out in words. I know there is nothing wrong with SSA unless you act upon the attractions. I’m not sure if I am justifying why I did what I did or not. My parents raised me to respect women and growing up I kind of viewed sex as bad so I would suppress my attractions towards women. I ended up discovering masturbation and porn followed shortly after that. I can get extremely jealous/envious of other male bodies too. So I’m confused as to why I view it, is it because of that envy or something else?

I was overweight for the longest time, I’ve since lost a lot of weight but can’t bring myself to goto a gym. I never had many friends growing up, I was mostly alone. I don’t think I really started talking to people until Sophomore year of High School. Fast forward to college and nothing much has changed. I am a lot better socializing now but still don’t have anyone to hang out with. I’m just so afraid of socializing in certain situations. Maybe I need to get a therapist or something to help with this. I’ve wasted half of my time in college just getting by, the only thing I’ve done spiritually is to start going to confession at least once a month. I normally go every 2 weeks. I don’t think about masturbating at all and then as it gets closer to the 2 week mark I find myself “needing release”. Trying to suppress a physical urge with your mind is extremely difficult to me. I need to find something physical todo to replace that bad habit. Yet I’m so afraid of certain social situations and how my body looks I can’t bring myself to goto a gym or something.

Ok, I’m going to stop there. I’m trying to type the point I want to get across. It seems I can explain this in my head but typing it out isn’t working. I really want to change my life and escape from this cycle of depression I seem to fall in every time I give in to porn. I also need to improve my self-esteem and body image and over come this social anxiety I feel. I feel like I’ve wasted the last 2 years of my life. I keep saying “I’ll change” and I never do. I thought with this lenten season I may be able to change some of this but I’ve yet to see any indicators of that. I typed this sloppy draft at least. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi OP, I understand to struggle of wanting to improve in varkous areas of life and failing at that. You may say this is cliche and you have heard this before, but let me say that God really loves you. I do not know what your prayer life is like, but I recommend that you visit the Blessed Sacrament frequently. Jesus is there waiting for you. Pour out all your worries, i cluding your social anxiety, your struggle to lose weight, your problems with impurity etc. Beg God to heal you, as often as you remember. Pray the Rosary daily. If it feels daunting, start with one decade each day. It only takes three to five minutes. You can pray a Rosary novena for your healing.

You can also take up new hobbies and activities. This can help with your self esteem, and it feels good to learn something new. Maybe you have the desire to learn a new language, a musical instrument, or something else.

Another thing. I have been reading Consoling the Heart of Jesus, and I think it’s awesome. I hope it can help you too.

I’ll pray for you, and have a Holy Week.

Good advice. Volunteering is another way to become involved with some like-minded folks.

I also agree that the daily rosary can be helpful.

I have more than one bad habit. So far, I’m focusing on just one at a time so it doesn’t get quite so overwhelming. I’d recommend that to you, as well, and also focusing on one day at a time. One day at a time is how people with addictions get through (and of course turning to God).

@jtwp:

Be merciful to yourself and take one day a step at a time. Pray to God for forgiveness and trust that you have received it. God takes extreme delight in forgiving us, including repetitive sins. Do not start a wide variety of projects and promises at once and then not complete any of them. Find simple projects and complete them steadily. Be a work horse, not a race horse. Find opportunities to thank God for things, as well as opportunities in your life to relax, recoup, and spend quiet time with God in reverence and love. Talk to him as a friend and lover, not as a judge. Find regular sacramental confession & spiritual counsel. Journal your successes, large and small. Acknowledge your sinfulness, but do not glorify it or give it more infamy than it deserves, since this can make a person despairing or despondent. Millions upon millions of people are where you are, including many who are attracted to the same sex. Enjoy your time in life, laugh, love, cry when necessary & steadily grow upward and prepare for your future as an adult that is capable of making positive change in the world for God & His family, in whatever capacity that might be. There will be hard moments and there will be easy moments, but listen to God’s quiet voice and everything will be well.

Peace.

I would talk with a professional counselor, especially about the anxiety issues. If you are in college, there must be a counseling service available. Perhaps ask your pastor also.

You have received some wonderful thoughts on the spiritual side of your issue.

I clipped this from your original post,

"Maybe I need to get a therapist or something to help with this. I’ve wasted half of my time in college just getting by…"

I think it would be a good plan to get a therapist to help you with some of your issues. Another poster had noted perhaps on campus there are therapists that would be able to assist you.

Mary.

Jeremiah/NAB
29:11
For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—oracle of the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.
