I need a ASL translator for my wedding in central Wisconsin. Does anyone have any advice for how I can obtain the services of one? We’ve already exhausted all the sugestions the parish had to offer.
Is there an “official” ASL translation for the Mass or is it just up to the interpretor to translate? I guess I assumed there was a set translation, just as there is in any other language. Anyway, I guess it doesn’t matter. All the deaf people that are coming to my wedding are Catholic and know the Mass. The interpretor is mostly for the vows and the homily.
My parish that I went to growing up had an ASL translator for the 10:30 Mass. I assume they translate the English version into ASL, since it is an “English” language. Check with some of the universities and community colleges in your area. You may be able to find an ASL teacher that could translate if your diocese does not have the resources. A lot of school districts also have ASL translators for their deaf students.
Ask the deaf attendees what they would recommend. They are probably “in the know” with regard to the translation resources in your area and they would probably be very flattered that you are taking the time to make sure they can be as much a part of the wedding as possible.
