A few weeks ago, my sister and I were in a Kroger and there was a display for Oreos that featured all the members of the band One Direction on them. As we passed by, I made a sarcastic comment to my sister about how feminine the band members looked, and she agreed. She then made a comment wondering whether or not they were homosexual. Immediately, a little voice in my head said “You said they looked feminine, therefore you are gay.” I pushed it to the back of my mind. However in the weeks since, I keep having what would almost qualify as panic attacks because this voice keeps telling me that I am gay. I know for a fact however, that I am not gay. I have been sexually attracted to girls my whole life, including many struggles with pornography, and never once have I been tempted or attracted by any male featuring pornography. Also in my personal relationships, I have have had many female crushes. So while my logical mind says that I cannot be gay, this voice (devil or demon, I’m guessing?) keeps telling me I am. I looked this up on the Internet, and apparently something called HOCD exists. Homosexual Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, in which a straight person is constantly tormented by thoughts that he is gay, despite no evidence to suggest this is actually the case. All the symptoms listed seem to correlate with what has been happening to me. Basically what I’m asking is this: what prayers can be prayed, what saints intercession can be utilized, ANYTHING to get these thoughts out of my head. They are becoming a permanent distraction.

Additional details: when these thoughts enter my head, they are occasionally coupled with images of men. However, my mind always reacts to these images with disgust, so much disgust I have actually almost physically vomited. When this first started happening, to convince myself that I was still “straight,” I looked at pornography featuring only women. (I realize in retrospect this was horrible and a mortal sin, and I will confess accordingly) however, I was still attracted to the women, and not once during this act did men enter my head.
These types of thoughts that are intrusive & persistent are common with scrupulosity/OCD. My daughter deals with that. I just got her this book and she really likes it so far.

First of all, you shouldn’t crack jokes about people looking feminine or “gay.” Second, what you’re experiencing is something on the OCD spectrum, and it seems to be specifically dealing with obtrusive thoughts. This is known as “O” type or “obsessive type” OCD. Seek medical counseling if the problems persists.

Is there a time frame in which such thoughts have to stick around to be considered OCD, or is a couple weeks enough time?
A couple of weeks is plenty. My daughters OCD/scrupulosity ebbs and flows. She was in counseling for a while but its been more than a year since she’s seen her counselor. She’s away from home right now, in Europe with my dad and has a little too much time on her hands. It helps her to keep her mind busy. She’s having a bit of a spike at the moment. I sent the book to her kindle & I have it on mine as well as we share an account. I started reading it. So far its the best I’ve read that addresses religious scrupulosity specifically -and its written by a Catholic who has a psychiatric background.

It is very common (I’ve learned from previous reading) to have doubts about sexual preference with OCD. Which is why your post caught my eye. My daughter has always liked boys, had a crush in like third grade, has had two boyfriends so far (she’s 17), talked about the attractiveness of certain boys but because of the OCD she been troubled with these kinds of thoughts before. And they get stuck in "loop"in her head and she struggles to turn it off. Its helps her to realize its common with this anxiety disorder.

(My daughter’s OCD is almost completely O as in obsessive thoughts. Her only compulsion is seeking reassurance “that she’s ok”. As in not dying of an awful illness or in mortal sin.)

Hi there.
Can I ask your age and what else is going on in your life at the moment?
Have you ever had previous anxiety/panic attacks before - even small ones.
Have you suffered the loss of a significant other within the last 18 months?
Are you in any way depressed for the last 12 months?

If so I suggest you may have a mild underlying anxiety/OCD disorder that surfaces when you are stressed. Underling mild disorders like this naturally come closer to the surface as part of the maturing process from teenage to early 30s by which time most people have settled down into a stable persona/life-style.

Such mild disorders latch onto almost anything. Sexual themes are sensitive topics so the compulsive/anxious “recirculations” often involve them.

Strategies that involve “switching off” rational thinking for good lengths of time can be good “circuit breakers” wrt such seemingly inescapable anxieties and obtrusive thoughts.
Learning Tai Chi routines or meditation techniques (eg buddhist style) can be very helpful.
