Hi, I’m Adam, and I need some help on deciding what to do. I recently found a serial number of a product, contacted the company claiming my version of the product was broken (I don’t own the product) and asked for a replacement. They have agreed, however my parents know nothing about this and if I told them what I did, I would face punishment or my parents losing trust in me, however if I lie to them about where the product is from, I feel I wouldn’t be able to take the moral burden of doing that. What do I do? If I tell my parents about how I got it, what do I tell them? I’m so lost, and I’ve been praying over this but don’t have any idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So, you found the serial number of a product you don’t have and asked for a “new” one, and now they will be sending you something you didn’t previously have before for free?

If that’s the case, then that is stealing. So yeah, that’s a serious sin.

I would contact the company and cancel your order.

Both stealing and lying are sins, as is disobeying your parents.

Then call the company and cancel. And then go to confession ASAP.

Send it back. Throw it away if you receive it. Go to confession.

If you can repay it , then offer the money to your parents and tell them what you did. If you cant repay it, then ask to do some jobs for your parents. You wont lose their trust if you are honest and want to at least try to make up for it. Confession is also something to participate in when you have the opportunity.

It would depend on what was stolen. Stealing a $3 plastic kazoo is less serious than stealing a $2000+ computer, for example.
