And also talk to your union rep if your grad students are unionized. If the administration gives you guff, the union can back you up, and given grad students recently have gone on strike, most universities will be hesitant to not give you your rights.

At present, it’s the pregnancy that’s the biggest hurdle because if I’m not able to handle field work in the spring that’s basically a year’s work down the drain on my current project, which impacts funding and all kinds of other things.

Beyond the delivery, though, it’s just that my career, once I’m out of school, will require a lot of extended travel and long hours like MJJean indicated and my boyfriend travels with his work often at the moment as well, although usually just for a week or a few days at a time.
My Dearest Gullveig,

There really is a lot I would love to say at the moment, but I talk too much and write too much. Since, I only a few minutes home today… I’ll try to talk “short”.

I always tell everyone and my kids… no education is wasted. I promise you if something changes your current project plan… nothing is down the drain.

When my son was applying to sail around the world visiting county after country with a program called Semester at Sea (SAS). SAS wanted the students to check with their home university to see if the classes they were taking on board ship would transfer to their home school. I told my son, not to let that interfere with his decision to spend a Semester traveling the world. I told him, no education is wasted, even if course work didn’t transfer, the beauty of what he learned from visiting so many cultures is a gift.

He is currently living in the jungle of another country where he went for an unpaid internship as part of his course studies. In fact, he paid them a very large amount of money to do this program. Once the internship was over, he had not accomplished all he wanted to do, so I suggested he stay in the jungle longer. This is putting off his graduation a bit longer, but the value of his experience is beyond measure.

I truly believe if changes need to be made with your field work and current project - you will find Peace - you will see and learn things that you would not have learned had your project gone as planned from Day 1.

Apply that to **all **of life. It is the Unexpected Journey on our Expected Journey that brings us so much beauty. Embrace each path of your journey in life.

I can relate a bit to your plans as a parent who will travel a lot. My husband travels a lot and sometimes for long periods. Sometimes we travel with him on shorter adventures. What our kids learn along the way is a gift.

I laugh at all the traveling our children have been able to do. When my husband and I were pregnant with our first child, we traveled and traveled every chance we had because “I knew once we had our little baby, I would never be able to travel again.” Well, I was wrong, life with children chances - but for the better.

My son recently was able to spend time with one of his few living heroes, Dr. Jane Goodall. There was a mother and child at this event. The child was around 11 and had fallen asleep late in the evening. His mother said to my son, “I hope he remembers this.” My son reply, “Oh, yes, he will. My parents took us to events like this from the time we were very young and I remember all of those.”

Our goal was to give our kids the world for their classroom. Our adult kids, who are probably near your age, continue that idea of the world “and beyond” to be their “classroom”. Our daughter who is now a wife and mother - continues that with her two little ones.

You and your dear boyfriend will be able to take each day - each adventure - each year - bit by bit. You do not have to plan all of the unexpected today. You will see life unfold in a beautiful pattern - unfolding as needed - unfolding and giving you the time to re-evaluate each new design and choose for that day the best for the three of you.

Think of the plans in archeology… when something truly wonderful and totally unexpected is uncovered - the plans for the excavation changes - and for the better of the new found treasure.

I expect, too, that the community of those in archeology is a tight knit “family”. I would expect that if you took your little prince or princess on an adventure with you - you would be able to secure assistance before arriving. Others will be able to recommend someone they know who you can hire to care for your little one or even someone in the local Archeological Society may volunteer to assist you and your dear child.

May you find Peace within yourself.

Beyond the delivery, though, it’s just that my career, once I’m out of school, will require a lot of extended travel and long hours like MJJean indicated and my boyfriend travels with his work often at the moment as well, although usually just for a week or a few days at a time. So, if we get married, he and the kid would either have to travel with me, which would affect his ability to work, or put up with me being gone for long stretches of time. If we don’t get married and I’m the custodial parent, the kid will have to come with me, which means he wouldn’t get to see the kid for months at a time, which I would feel horrible about, especially since he’s really psyched about the baby and wants to be there as much as possible. If he’s the custodial parent, then not only will I be gone a lot and not available to help, which would be hard for me, he will have to juggle whatever travel he still has to do with childcare.

So, we’re looking at whether it would be financially viable for him to primarily be a stay at home dad if we got married and how much he would be able to reduce his travel if we didn’t. The next step beyond that would be to talk to my parents and see if they would be willing to keep the kid during the times when we both have to travel. They only live a couple hours away, so that could work, but it’s not the best solution long-term.
You could take the baby with you while your BF/husband is working. Depends on a few factors, but it’s possible you could arrange to bring your Lil Bit with you and keep him/her with you while working. Just get a Pack N Play and a baby backpack. Set baby up in one or the other and go about working. Again, people love babies and they love a woman willing to work hard to finish a degree with a baby.

Custody doesn’t have to be an issue if the baby is born and you are not married. Consult a lawyer about state law where you live, but here a father can sign an Affidavit of Parentage at the time of birth and be listed on the birth certificate. If there is no court case saying otherwise, for all intents and purposes he would be considered an equal custody parent. If you decide to go official and have a child support case and a custody and visitation agreement you could agree on you having full physical custody and sharing legal custody. In that case, you can leave baby with him and he would be able to handle any issues.

If your parents would be willing to help here and there, go for it! Since you live a couple hours apart they won’t see the baby as much as they’d like. No grandparent ever does, lol. So it would give them time to bond with their grandchild and give the baby time to know and love Grandma and Grandpa.

And I cannot repeat this enough, see your union rep. Unions are there for a reason, and it’s not to provide slush funds for center-left politicians.

He said he told them yesterday that we were going to come up early and that we will definitely both leave if they can’t be respectful, so hopefully if we have to talk about all this, it will go more smoothly than it has so far.
I’m praying for you to have a peaceful gathering during this Thanksgiving celebration.

If the day is going peaceful, you might want to take a family Thanksgiving picture - to show your dear child his/her first Thanksgiving.

If you would rather not include grandparents, you and your dear boyfriend might enjoy a picture of this holiday with your unborn child.

May this family gathering bring Peace to each of you. May there be a welcoming between each one. May this be the beginning of many joyful days together. May Love overshadow all worries, concerns or fears.

So, just an update on this. Thanksgiving was fine. Everyone behaved themselves, more or less, with a little prompting. My boyfriend and I had a chance to talk about things more indepth during the trip, and decided that we may as well go ahead and get married since things look to be headed in that direction anyway, so we’re going to do that later this month since neither of us really want a big to-do wedding anyway. He’s worked it out with his job so that he can cut down on a lot of his travel and work from home most of the time, which means he can travel around with me for field work when necessary as long as there’s internet close by and he can be around to help with the baby after delivery this summer. My parents have volunteered to keep the baby whenever we need them to while we’re getting the work situations sorted out, so that’s a load off. So, all I have to do is talk to my department chair tomorrow and see if we can work out a plan for the field school in the spring.

Bonus points: His brother feels so guilty about spilling the beans that he’s supposedly getting us a really nice wedding gift to make up for all the trouble.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, guys. It was very helpful. 🙂

Thanks for the update. Sounds like it all went well.

Best wishes and prayers for your upcoming wedding and starting your family. I’m sure with the initial stress worked through that you’ll begin to experience the joy that this experience can bring.

Congratulations on all the wonderful joys in your life - a precious baby tucked sweetly in your womb, a loving boyfriend - now soon to be a loving husband, your up coming marriage, a peaceful Thanksgiving with your fiancé’s family, a soon-to-be brother-in-law who has remorse that he shared a private message with his parents, parents who are ready to help as hands-on grandparents, a workable plan on being parents with jobs that require travel.

Blessings on each of you in this new journey in Life.

Thank you for sharing your concerns and joys with us.

Thank you for the update! I am very happy for you and wish you, your soon to be husband, and your little one all the best! 😃
