Hello my brothers & sisters in Christ. I hope you are all well.

I just have a question regarding forgiveness. So recently, a good friend of mine, we were drinking one night and got into a huge argument. Both of us said hurtful things. Anyway, I reached out to said friend and apologised for my part in things, though I’ve yet to receive an apology. Part of me feels good and at peace because I reached out and did the right thing, but the other part of me (ego?) hates that I did. Where do I go from here?

Maybe cut down on the drinking. It clouds our judgement and can lead to depression.
Forgive yourself

Drinking messes with our judgement. It was good that you apologized to your friend, any decent person should do that. Even though it may hurt or be upsetting that your friend didn’t apologize,be the bigger person.

Being on high to medium dose steroids for the past 3+ years, I have become an expert at apologies. Father told me in confession that the devil hates apologies, as it takes humility to apologize, and there is no humility in the devil.

Wounds take time to heal. Rest easy that you have done the right thing. Now, on to confessing the drinking to (slight?) excess as well as the hurtful words.

Drinking is a catch 22 - you may not have meant the words, which decreases your culpability. But, the voluntary drinking which lead to it raises your culpability on the other hand.

I gave up drinking when I was 20. Friends asked why I did not drink. “I don’t need a reason not to drink” was my reply. Made sense even to my friends who still drank.

It’s great that you were able to apologize. You can be at peace with that. You have done well. If your friend apologizes later, or not at all, don’t let that bother you. Probably your friend is hurt. Sounds like you are still hurt too. Give it time.

And pray for your friend.
Who knows what graces God desires to give your friend.
And who knows whether anyone else has ever prayed heartfelt prayers for him.

Next time you see your friend, give him a hug. If he hugs back, that means he forgives you. Some people have difficulty saying the words.
