Yesterday, I had a meeting with our vice-chancelor about my interest in getting diocesan approval as an apologetics speaker in our area. He was very excited and wants to support me “1000%”. He asked me to write up my curriculum, list of topics, and decide what my stipend would be on top of gas allowance. He would then write a letter of recommendation and promote my talks among the parishes at the next deanery meeting. We also agreed that I would do a 6 part series during lent at his own parish. So, my first request is your prayers that, as this ministry gets off to a start, I’m guided by the holy Spirit and meet success in my efforts to help Catholics connect with their faith in an orthodox and enthusiastic way. My problem, though is with the stipend. I never intended for this to be a “job” or money-making venture, but at the same time, I need to justify time away from my family, and I also need to finance the outreach and resources in my ministry. And, as the V.C. put it, if I don’t charge a stipend, some might take advantage of the generousity.
So, any advice on how much a stipend should be? I thought maybe $50 for parishes within our diocese and maybe $75 outside. Does that sound about right? I hoped some of you may have helped to bring in speakers and know a ball-park. One of my hopes is to provide myself at a more affordable rate for parishes that can’t afford more popular or well-known speakers.
Lastly, anyone know about the legal aspects? Do I have to register as a business or ministry with the government? Any tax insight? Thanks.
