Hello,

I fell way from the church for 4 years, but have started going to mass on Sunday. During the time I was away, I got married. My wife is Mormon, at the time, she wasn’t going to church either, so it didn’t seem to matter. A few months ago, she started going to church again. So now we are experiencing some tension over something we didn’t think would matter when we got married. I haven’t yet taken the step of confession or getting my marriage validated, but I’m working on it.

My question is, does anyone have advice on Catholic/Mormon marriage? I hadn’t planned for this situation to be an issue, and divorce is the last thing I will ever do. Still, we have pretty different outlooks on church and what to teach our kids, and I could use some outside help thinking through the issues.

Sorry, unclear. Planning and trying to have kids, but none yet.

I’m married to a former mormon. He hasn’t been active for 13 years and will never go back. The mormon church pretty much ruined him to organized religion, so I’m not quite in your shoes. However, I do have a pretty good handle on how mormons view things. Depending on how devout your wife is, she may start to discuss a temple wedding (your conversion). If that is a no go, she may be encouraged to divorce you in order to get a temple worthy mormon to be sealed to so she can be with her family in the Celestial Kingdom. If she is cool with you staying Catholic, she may just think that she can get sealed after death to someone. Mormons are very anti infant baptism. None of my mormon in-laws came to our son’s because they think that is an abomination.

I would restrain for having children just for now. Perhaps you can bring her up the issue that it will cause, and you wish for your children to be raise Catholic.

Ask to go see a priest and discuss about your situation.

I pray for you. I found that praying the rosary has done miracle for my family. My husband has converted recently. I did a one week fast and praying the rosary every day. I started by committing by only once a week. When i resume to work, coincidentally my husband also started to go in his own church and tried to get me go with him. I stand my ground that i betrayal God once and will never do it again, not to mention that his church didn’t honor Mother Mary.

Continue to get educated about the Catholic church (dvd, books etc…). You need to have a strong foundation to know that you are at the right place.

I pray for you!

She thinks that God will make it work out after we die, as in posthumous conversion and sealing. Not sure if that is an accurate lds belief. She is horrified by infant baptism. I could see myself letting that one go, but I’m not sure It would be ok with the catholic church if I didn’t baptize my kids.

you!
Kids are the big issue. The religion stuff started popping up again when we decided to try to have kids last year. She can’t imagine how to raise kids without the lds church. This is hard to hear, but you’re probably right, and we should wait.

Yeah, the lds children’s programs are really streamlined. It starts at 18 months and goes up to college/missions. My husband actually has fond memories of that stuff because it was fun and all his friends were there. I can see the attraction there. Everything is done. Catholic parishes vary so much in what they offer for families.
