I’m not sure what to call it but for simplicity I’ll call it scrupulosity for now.

I’ve been raised Methodist but I’ll be joining the RCIA next year, so confession is something new to me.
Recently I’ve been really worried on whether what I am doing is wrong. Not the obvious things like helping a person or something but the small things.

For example, I’ve been very worried about whether I’ve dishonored God by including His name and something detestable in the same sentence. An example is the number of the Beast. It also worries me whether writing down something like Satan, or the number is dishonoring God.
An example is I recently replied to another thread asking about the numberphile video about 666, and my answer tries to avoid putting Jesus and the number in the same sentence, and avoid trying to say the number at all (instead just calling it the number). This very thread with both Jesus and the detestable things (the number etc.) makes me worry about whether I’ve dishonored God.

Other such things are whether I am prideful not in action but in actions that would please God but with some satisfaction of sinful pride behind it. For example, I truly wanted to help my fellow classmates so I did something, but at the end I also felt the satisfaction of pride that just wanted attention. It’s things like these that makes me fearful of God at night and want His mercy. Writing this very thread makes me worry as to whether I am just being prideful and dishonorable to God.

Another example is a chat with my friends talking about no school/day offs 5 minutes ago. I said I don’t have school on April 18 and 21st. I was afraid of saying “because of Easter” because it might seem distasteful to God because it downplays Christ’s sacrifice by saying it’s “because of Easter.”

I’ve been praying to Mary and Jesus for strength and mercy. My reasoning tells me it could be from my different upbringing as a Methodist and also the devil trying to prevent me from joining in the fullness of Christ in the Catholic Church.

Any comments to help me, or advice in addition to the prayers I am already doing?

Praise God for your call into the Church! I was also raised Methodist and was received into the Church two years ago.

It does require a lot different mindset, and I went through the same thing. I’m not sure how often you go to confession, but I started going every week or two and talking through my examination of conscience with my confessor–that was really helpful to discern what I was doing that was actually a sin or just me being overly scrupulous. Also, remember to trust in God’s mercy–He’s guiding you through this, and isn’t expecting you to be perfect right away. Continue to strive for holiness, maybe do an examination of conscience at night before you go to bed, go to Confession and talk to the priest, and it will get easier. Promise 🙂 I’m so glad for your desire for God’s mercy!

These concerns should be brought before a priest. If you are indeed scrupulous, then you’ll need a (that being one) spiritual director like a priest to help you sort all of this out.

Dear friend, firstly, congratulations on deciding to become Catholic!

**“Forgetfulness of self is the tomb of scruples.” **

Focus on Our Lord and His love for you. Make frequent acts of love, such as the prayer suggested by Jesus to Servant of God, Sr. Consolata Betrone: “Jesus, Mary! I love you! Save souls!” This will bring joy to your heart and light to your intellect. You need this divine light to discern the difference between “first movements” of the mind and passions (such as involuntary thoughts and anger, respectively), venial sin and mortal sin etc.

Sin is voluntary by nature. Mentioning Jesus and something bad in the same sentence, for example, is not a sin. If it were, the Bible would have to be burnt! (Think of some of the accusations made against Our Lord).

“You must think only of loving Me! I will think of everything else, even to the smallest details!” (Jesus to Sr. Consolata Betrone)
