Hi CAF,

What’s the situation in terms of working against porn? Is it even possible to do such a thing?

I work in a computer company & I got the idea that somehow my computer work could defeat pornography. My work & my company has nothing to do with porn but as it’s the computer industry, I know that people have somehow raised concerns about porn on computers.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
n

Eh, that’d be nice, but it’s really more of a legal issue. Since porn is legal to make, sell and watch, there is little anyone that isn’t a lawyer, politician or right’s activist can do.

the only thing I can think of is developing / raising awareness of parental controls. Porn is especially damaging to teens and there are so many great apps that can limit a child’s access to online material and also notify the parent’s when they try to do something they shouldn’t on their tablets / phones.

However, most parents don’t care enough to use them or don’t think they are necessary. Or the kids will just watch the stuff on a friend’s device or download it onto a USB. Ultimately, while I think “doing something about porn” is a laudable goal, I think that it requires raising awareness and activism at the moment.

Unless, of course, you want to set up a “Catholics Anonymous” online vigilante activist group and start denial of service attacks on porn sites. JOKE

There probably are initiatives of the kind in a commercial context offered as options or in the context of a public wellbeing campaign.

You could research those as a private individual and pray for their fruitfulness, if it wouldn’t suit your company to be involved.

Through contact details given by such initiatives you might also check whether or how they could use freelancers or volunteers, but praying is the main thing.

Just a vague thought (based on brief things I read somewhere a while back).

Start a blog or web site encouraging people not to watch it. There are a great many articles on the internet showing how watching porn is damaging.

A recent Time magazine cover story is telling us the negative effects are increasing for the younger generation who grew up with it. WARNING: Cover has a suggestive photo.

Some may say little can be done, but as Christians, we should do what we can.

How about a few years hard labor for anyone caught viewing it? 😉
(Sorry man. Couldn’t resist.)

But seriously. I think with porn I’d like 2 things made clear and true: all porn sites should have a .xxx extension. Only a special porn browser should be able to pull up those pictures. They should never show up on regular searches.

That way you’d need that porn search program installed in order to sift through that wreckage. And you’d have a hard time forgetting you’ve got that.

So no kids tripping into porn by accident. Everything would be clean and easy to decide on up front.

Porn industry is controlled according to Holy See’s jurisprudence. But be wary of it, natural law deems us responsible for the holy acts we choose and holy acts we decide. Whatever it is, sin is always against the highest apostasy of the church.
