Im writing because I need advice on how to help my sister out of an abusive marriage. My sister has been married for like 13 years to an abusive man…so many stories so little space. Briefly, he was abusive from very early on in the relationship even though she didn’t really realize it, even now she doesn’t realize it started a long time ago. It was insidious at first, he was controlling and condescending. Then it escalated. I lived with them for like a month after I had moved to a city where they were living at the time. This was about 4 years into the marriage. There I witnessed how he berated and humiliated her all the time by calling her stupid because she would forget to do something or calling her ugly and telling her to cover up when she bought clothes etc. He did that to me a couple of times and she insisted it was because “he cares”. At the time it was her responsibility to work and take care of the household finances, keeping the house clean etc while he got his professional degree. I was young and I had never witnessed someone like this before (or since actually). One time he was scolding her in front of me and I had nowhere to go and didn’t know what to do, I said nothing, he snapped at me for “judging him” and kicked me out of their house with nothing. I literally had said nothing but he said he saw it in my eyes. For two years my sister and I did not speak. She started retreating, loosing all her friends etc. Its been 10 years of incidents like this.

Fast forward to today, she has children and she is in a precarious situation. She lost her job a year or so ago and she is basically living like a slave to her husband who mentally abuses her and manipulates her. He has cheated on her probably since half the time they have been married at least, he still is and is unrepentant about it. Some of the stuff I know is because recently she has begun to open up to me. More disturbing is that although he is a professional who makes very good pay, they are literally bankrupt, he runs up debt and spends like crazy on himself while my sister but more importantly their children go without. She has no access to money, he makes her beg for every cent he gives her, our family have all at some point paid their mortgage, bills, car payments, etc. Our parents have to buy groceries for them and personal items for her. Last month when the temperature dropped he didn’t have money to fix the heater in the home but I found out had money to go out of town with his mistress. My sister is devout and although she has begun to wake up, the thought of divorce is just paralyzing her. I don’t want to encourage her to do something she shouldn’t but I’m very scared for her and the children. Is this stuff even legal? Maybe he also beats her but IDK. What do I do? Any ministry I can call? I know I can pray but any other advice is welcome. Prayers are welcome too.

PRAY, for all involved. The Holy Spirit has an unique way of revealing the situation, connecting the resources and healing both of them. In the words of St. Padre Pio, pray, hope and don’t worry. I am praying for them now, so you interceeded as the Spirit put this on your heart! Well done, we are made to help each other!

Praying for your sister. I would think you would be speaking of my cousin except that she is an only child. Same situation which has caused the family much concern.

I wish I had more help to send you (and I’m sitting here telling myself–never underestimate the power of prayer, Petra!!!) So, I’m sending you my most heart-felt prayers for blessings of strength, faith, peace, hope and love for your sister and her family! Father, in Jesus’ name we pray…

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

Your sister needs to develop the confidence (with your help) to get out of this relationship. The Church has no problem with married couples separating for grave reasons, and this certainly qualifies as grave. The only problem would be getting an annulment if she wants to remarry, and I think that’s the last of her concerns right now. Some men are simply not psychologically capable of being a good husband and father. His abuse is likely to get even worse as the years go by. I’m reluctant to recommend separation and divorce, but sometimes it’s necessary for the wife and children’s safety. I will pray about this. Please keep us informed. God bless… - Rob in Oregon

Follow-up: Can you or your family set up a safe place for her to go when she leaves him? She may have to move out when he’s out of town. She probably feels trapped, with him controlling all the money. Perhaps there’s a women and children’s shelter where she could go until she finds a more stable living situation. Hearing about a good woman and her children being abused like this really disturbs me. I imagine my own wife or daughter suffering this way.

Thank you all for your prayers. I really think that I am allowing myself to despair, maybe as an excuse to not pray more, since that’s all I have been able to do for years. If it was me giving myself advice I would say that praying is not the “least” you can do because I really believe in power and necessity of prayer. But it is just so difficult ; like they say sometimes its harder to see those we love suffer, more so than suffering ourselves.
My parents live in the same town so, she always has a place to go. I don’t want to push her, I don’t want her to shut me out. Her psychological trauma is real.
Waiting for God’s answers is hard, so is not knowing if he already gave me an answer I just didn’t catch it.
I really appreciate the prayers though, that’s the best thing to receive from others when faith begins to flail.
