You most certainly are right here about needing to replace nutrients. B12 is one vitamin that needs to be added to the diet; It can be done by way of B12 tablets (any multivitamin that has quantities of B12) or by inclusion of legumes and pod bearing foods such as peas, or lentil, or chickpeas.
Yea, B12 is a mineral. Your body makes it and stores it, but you need to give it some to start with. So taking it in pill form periodically is a good idea. Thought not necessry every single day.

i have heard also that nutritional yeast is another source of B12. i think most soy milk is now fortified with it, and of course LOTS of people (omni and veggi alike) take multivitamins. 👍

for me, B12 is an excellent justification for the occasional rock star energy drink i enjoy :bounce: 😛
Yes to nutritional yeast. And yes to soy milk. I love Silk Very Vanilla. It is the best.

I see myself as a vegitarian-- cows are just the middle men.

“The stuff that food eats”=salad.

You’re all entitled to make your own choices, just watch the level of self righteousnes, please. Because there’s no evidence that our Lord was vegan [quite the contrary], and if you are setting yourselves up as HIS moral superior…

Oh, and remember, men: Soy is emasculating-- kills your testosterone.

There is nothing self-righteous about food choices. It is based on spirituality and spiritual endeavour with a goal of attaining Beatific Vision when this life is over. All spiritual effort and striving is towards that end.

No one said anything about Jesus and his diet and I don’t see where any claims to that were made in this thread. I wonder why you felt the need to bring that up?

The journey to God is just that, an individual journey and the Church provides all the signposts, the sacraments and the Way of the Lord. For some who tread that path, their diet is important. However, you make the choices with regard to diet, not anyone else. And your choices are finally a matter between you and the Divine; it is not for anyone else to judge.

Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

Well, I certainly couldn’t say that I am Our Lords moral superior by any means. And I have wondered whether Jesus was vegan or vegetarian. There is certainly evidence to show that he ate fish!
Oh, and remember, men: Soy is emasculating-- kills your testosterone.
I would ask for proof of this.
The people I work with and my fiancee have pointed out that I do seem to be less aggressive! I attributed this to not consuming all the steroids and growth hormones that they inject into the animals which are raised for slaughter.
As far as I know my testosterone level is quite fine.
🤷
I presume that excessive consumption of soy could present certain problems due to phytoestrogens. People who would try and substitute soy or tofu for meat are still stuck in the same meat and potatoes mindset. There are so many other tasty things to eat.

clogged arteries from excessive meat consumption are also emasculating. your heart and brain aren’t the only organs that need a healthy blood supply in order to function properly :yup:

My H, who was vegetarian before I was even born, has been medically proven to have a sky-high testosterone level - waaaaay above normal.

Load of old cobblers. 😛

No one asked you for a rude comment.
No one was being self-righteious by any means.
No one said anything about Jesus, let alone what he ate.
Please don’t barge in on a thread just to insult people’s food choices.

My my my!

Such indignation over a pretty simple answer to the question of ‘whether I’m vegitarian, and why’!

As I said, it’s a personal choice, just don’t assume vegitarianism makes you morally superior: our Lord wasn’t vegan, despit PETAs claims to the contrary.

Based on your responses, vegetarianism certainly hasn’t made this crowd more loving, peaceful, or christian…

And as to the soy info, it’s pretty common knowledge these days. I first read about it several years ago in Men’s Health magazine, and have seen confirming studies since. This is just the first link that happened to pop up when I googled:

There was no indignation, no flaming, no attacks. You received considered responses.

PETA have not made any claims in this thread. What PETA have to say has nothing to do with the brotherly-and-sisterly love and concern, along with additional useful information, given in this thread.

No one made that claim here. I made some assertions about animal food influencing the mind and asked people to consider that. I did not say anyone was more or less a Christian by cause of their diet.

I observe that you need to come here, tell us what we to say and not say, and then return and tell us what goes on elsewhere (which has nothing to do with this thread), and then tell us we are less of Christians for posting in here.

I am not concerned about Google. I make the choices for my health. If you feel, or believe, that soy has a deleterious impact, then that is your belief. You are free to hold that belief. Others are making observations based on their own experience and people in their personal environment. That they share that information does not make them any less or any more a Christian.

I have been a vegetarian since Thursday. My sister became Vegan and lectured us for weeks.

I had been thinking about becoming a vegetarian for a while - mostly because i don’t like the way animals are treated by the meat industry.

My only worry is lack of iron so i have been taking multivitamins and eating lots of chickpeas, sunflower seeds and nuts.

I’m a regular blood donor, so do your homework but fear not! Chickpeas are good for iron, yes, and so are spinach and olives.

Actually I think it is a vitamen actually I could be wrong though. But yes it is made by bacteria in your instestines. But the bacteria are too far down the tract for it to be absorbed so that’s why you need other sources. I have heard of people in like India or something too getting b12 from eating unwashed plants the bacteria apparently originates in the soil or something like that but I wouldn;t recommend anything like that.

As for the claim someone made about soy…I could be wrong but I think problems with soy only come if you eat alot of it. In moderation you should be fine. But like it has been said before more or less just because somone is a vegan or whatever doesn;t mean they drink soymilk and eat tofu. Some can;t even stand the stuff.

I know that many of our Saints were vegetarian or vegan.I am curious as to how many persons in the forums are and why…🤷
I think the saints did it because they saw it as penitential. The Orthodox, btw, keep a vegan fast for Lent. I’ve gone vegetarian during Lent, but could never give up fish.

On Soy - DH is allergic to casein and were advised that he shouldn’t rely on soy milk by our chiro.

What I understand is that North Americans don’t use soy properly. We over-process it. It is an estrogen-rich food and should be used sparingly for men. Baby boys especially should not use soy formula or eat tofu. It can have a bad effect on the little ones.

On the other hand, I saw tofu made on Martha Stewart of all places. Fresh tofu is totally unlike the stuff you buy in the store. The process is really involved otherwise I’d try to make it.

I have known a few vegeatian’s over the years. I don’t have any problem with it all. None of them ever made rude comments about our family eating meat. I do have to say that the girl my nephew once dated was the chubbiest vegetarain I have ever seen. She wouldn’t eat meat, but she ate anything else that wasn’t nailed down!
I worked with a guy who was a vegan. He chose to eat that way because he felt he didn’t need to kill an animal to live, he could eat so many other things… that’s fine not a big deal…but I worked in a store that sold hand made LEATHER shoes and bags. He loved the shoes, they were the only shoes he would wear. I asked him the one day if he felt hypocritical at all about his choice not to eat meat or any animal products because he didn’t want to kill animals, but he was fine with wearing them. His response was, well, they were going to kill the animal anyway, so why not.

Here’s another interesting fact sure to spark controversy! Although that wasn’t my intent when I started this thread.
I was actually hoping to swap recipes and other nutritional information to assist myself and my fiancee with our diets. But, I can see why the thread took this turn.Mostly because the animal food industries have duped us into false beliefs about the alleged nutritional superiority of meat products.
This was hard for me to watch. It may be difficult for some of you to watch too. But,I think it should be seen by all.The tactics and techniques in this video are not necessarily limited to turkeys. As stewards of God’s creation, I think that we, as Christians, should be more compassionate towards the companions which God has given us.(od course, I am disposed towards St.Francis and St.Jerome, anyway…)
Please try to post in the spirit of charity and love because this can become very heated.:signofcross:

vegetarian means no flesh of any animal. fish are animals. vegetarians do not eat them. Just so you know.

i suppose it depends where the leather comes from. if it is imported from places like india, it is a hazard both to the animals that are slaughtered for it, and the humans who tan the leather (think small children marinading in toxic chemicals for a pittance of pay … think dangerous pollutants in the water and air 😦 )

personally though i try to be positive towards people who are making some effort in this direction. if everyone in the world cut their meat consumption by 1/2, the world would be a better place - less polluted, less violent (since fewer animals would need to be raised and killed for food), and healthier. it serves no constructive purpose in my mind to be negative to those who aren’t “perfectly” vegan or vegetarian… none of us are perfect, we can only do the best we can.

i wish the catholic church would stop saying that you can’t eat “meat” on fridays but you can eat fish… by any other definition, fish ARE meat 🤷
