Affordable Liturgy of the Hours?

Seeking an affordable copy of the Liturgy of the Hours. I am on a fixed income and a quick search of Amazon gives me nice, but pricey editions.
 
Are you trying to buy the 4 volume set? Then even used ones would be pricey. However, Christian Prayer is far less expensive and gives you all you need to do the daily office. If you want an even cheaper version, then Shorter Christian Prayer will do very nicely. It contains enough for the average lay person to join in the daily liturgical prayer of the Church. 🙂
 
I actually have a copy of “Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours” published by the Daughters of St. Paul. It is copyrighted 1976, though. Is it still valid for use with the newer translation of the Roman Missal?

Yes, it’s still valid. The new translation of the Roman Missal had no effect on the LOTH, as it stands. Still, the LOTH is undergoing a newer translation that won’t be published for quite some time yet–probably years away. It’s one reason I wouldn’t invest in the current 4 volume set, even if I had the urge/money to buy it. 🙂

If you have a smart phone you can download a free app.
 
I’m just the opposite–I don’t have a smartphone and don’t plan on getting one. And I love the tactile sense of holding a book. Also, I have an eye condition that makes staring at small lighted screens uncomfortable for me. In any case, the OP already owns CP, so if a smartphone is out of financial reach at least that can be used without further expense. 🙂

That’s understandable & I can relate. A religious sister recommended me to “Christian Prayer,” which is a shorter version of Liturgy of the Hours. Here are some suggestions for cheaper prices:

Checkout the Catholic Company online website with tons of similar prices of Christian Prayer with different versions, depending on your preference.

(Price ranging from: $10 to above) but make sure to click your price range to the left.

or

Ebay for much more cheaper prices of these same Christian Prayer books similar to Liturgy of the Hours. Prices ranging from $2.99 (auction bidding) to $40 (mostly ‘Buy It Now’) to $75 (there’s 1 w/ that cost, but also says ‘or Best Offer’), but I don’t recommend buying the most expensive for the best quality, b/c that’s not always the case and you’re likely going to get a quality book bundle for a cheaper price and in great condition- why? b/c sellers have a set price to compete each other with in order for buyers to want to buy their book above the other sellers.

It’s still valid (I have one and use it) and it’s actually got more than the Catholic Book Publishers version, including the complete 4 week Psalter for the Office of Readings.

Can I quibble just a tiny, tiny bit? 🙂 I can think of at least two ways in which the Mass translation either does or may affect LOTH.

One, If a priest or deacon is present, the closing dialogue uses “And with your spirit.”

Two, at least in the USA, the USCCB has confirmed that one may use the new Mass collects where they translate the same prayer as the Closing Prayer of the LOTH.

I agree with you about not shelling out for a brand new 4 vol set in the current edition.

Yes, even if I could afford it, it wouldn’t tempt me–and not just because a new translation is in the works, but because CP and even SCP are sufficient for most laity’s needs, including those of my dh and I. :yup:

I love books also but I’m at the point where space is a concern. I don’t read books on my phone as my eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be but read most of them on my tablet. I agree a smart phone can be out of reach financially for many, but tablets are getting more affordable now.

I do have CP in book forum as well as being able to access it on my phone in order to pray LOTH.
 
There is also the Little Office, however, it is more repetitious than the Divine Office. The book itself is quite affordable.
 
I love iBreviary. Its (hopefully) teaching me how to pray LOTH, introducing me to tomes of great Psalms, Hymns, Saints, and… best thing ever, its on my phone.

One function that’s very eye opening is the verbal readings through different ‘English’ languages. Currently I have Ireland English set.
 
I have a copy of the four volume set and rarely use it. I am planning on selling it on Ebay for less than market value. Of course it does have some damage, like the ribbons being damaged. But other than that they are in good condition.
