Afraid of confession

Thank you, Mercygate, for your suggestions. They reveal thoughful insight. They make sense to me, and I will think about what you said.

I am so glad you found my first posting on this thread, as I did not expect to hear from anyone who had had a similar experience.

I searched for your reference to Luke in the Bible, and found, of course, the parable of the Good Shepherd, one of my favorites.

I think I may be able to return to confession soon, perhaps in a different but nearby parish. I will post again here when I do so.

There’s no rule that you have to go to confession in your home parish. My confessor (I go to the same person every time by appointment) is pastor of the church in the next town. I’m praying for you.

The Holy Spirit is moving you with his own breath. You will be greatly relieved and comforted when you have done this.

I want to put a plug here for the Mary Foundation. Go to the Catholicity website or Mary Foundation website. The Mary Foundation offers free tapes or cds and they truly are amazing. I would suggest getting the tape entitled “Confession”. After hearing this tape (after several days of spiritual warfare if you will) I called our priest and asked if he could hear a confession. I went to the rectory (shaking and trembling), met with him face to face and spilled my guts!!! We basically just talked, but not until I heard this tape did I sit down and examine my conscience and realize that sin is not just about naming off all the bad things I’ve done—Sin is about hurting the one who loves us the most JESUS CHRIST!!!

Also order Scott Hahn’s conversion story----**Marriage and ** **the Eucharist ** (now I completely understand the sacrament of marriage)—and The Mass Explained.

I went to confession yesterday, followed by Mass and communion.

You were were right, Mercygate, about feeling better immediately following confession. I felt at great peace with myself. Which is very unusual for me, because usually when I am under some stress, the stressed-out feelings remain for some hours even after I have taken some positive action.

I did prepare as best as possible for the confession by reviewing the 10 commandments and making a list, and doing some strenuous physical exercises earlier in the afternoon to help me feel calmer.

I would like to thank you, Mercygate, for your many words of kindness and encouragement over the past week, both here on this thread and through private messages. They helped so much.

Sometimes when people look at the Catholic Church, the thing that most puts them off is the Sacrament of Confession. I feel blessed to be among those who think that this is one of the best things about being Catholic. And now, I hope you will also be one of us.
